It's too bad that your build got lost because of Xbox inactivity. That sounds like the real culprit here. I'd definitely turn that off the first chance you get.
As far as the autosave situation goes, that's really your choice. Personally I have mine turned off. I've been an Audio Engineer for many years and I'm pretty disciplined about saving and backing up files regularly. It's a motto - "save regularly, save often". I'd rather mange my own save points then have the game do it for me. You just have to get in the mental habit of doing it.
Don't feel bad - I'm clearing out a large area down close to bed rock and need to cut through a couple of large lava fields. I need the obsidian for other projects so I'm mining it out rather than filling the lava in with sand or gravel.
I heard that the autosave function has been shown to relate to chunk errors, so I quit using it.
I've been working on this same section for three nights now because I have fallen in the same. dang. lava hole three times in a row, losing about 2 hours of work each time.
Sorry for your loss... but you "can rebuild it, [you] have the technology" (quoting TV show - 6 Million Dollar Man and showing my age - lol). At least now you'll know beforehad to make up some more glass before you start. Good luck. Sounds like a interesting project.
Dude.....That just sucks! (And is a good reminder to all of us to make sure we save and save often!) LOL I've been guilty of working on something for hours and not saving it. Only once (and there is when I learned my lesson) did I walk away from the Xbox with the intention of coming back to it only to not have that happen and I got hit with auto shutoff. >.<

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
lol, yeah I've kind had that happen to me before, but more like it was the autosaves fault than anything else. Easy fix though. I prefer having autosave off once i figured out how to get that feature turned off. Took me a good bit before i turned autosave off so i know quite well why you didn't have that on.
I am also one to save often though, as i am paranoid about loosing what i have built. I am basically still learning the functions of the xbox, as i never had one before a year ago. It was always the other two companies and a PC.
like most have been saying build up back up if you feel the need to, or better yet go onto something else and come back to it later.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Okay well all I can say is that really sucks and its happend to me before. Thankfully it wasnt 5 hours. Maybe 2 or 3 though. The only thing I can say is rebuild it and try to remember to save periodically. One thing though is that you should be able to build it a little faster this time since you already know what you are doing. I know the first time I built a massive mob grinder it took me many many hours. Then I built one for my friend and it was a couple of hours. Then I built another one and that took just over an hour since I had all of the little tricks down by then. Just my opinion, but I would go for it.
I disabled my auto turn off as soon as i found out that my xbox turned off and I was so confused. Had to go to the store and when I came back my xbox was off. Sure it was just on the main menu, but if I was in a game, I would be mad, and this was before the auto save feature. Though just like developing a site, or using word, should always save as much as possible just in case of power failure. I have auto save off on the game due to the lack of background saving. I see that little chest up there in the corner, but what exactly does that do? Absolutely nothing. That's for sure. =P If they implemented a background auto save feature then I'd use it. But in this game, I don't like auto save, and I'm quite glad we are not like the PC where if you exit the game you have to save it as well, you can just back out and not save. My friend hates me for that, and thinks it's stupid, he's a hardcore Minecraft PC guy and doesn't like the xbox version at all, and the help we get.
But other than that, save often, and keep the auto off feature off.
Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions. I've now turned off the Xbox auto shutdown setting, and remade my tunnel whilst manually saving frequently. It took half the time than it originally did, and I made the design a bit better too.
I now have an underwater tunnel connecting one of my big houses with my treehouse.

Not to mention punctuation.
Again, save often.

1. The topic was named "Venting my frustration". If you didn't want to read a vent you shouldn't have clicked here.
2. The post indicates why he didn't want to use auto save. If can't read a post, don't complian about it.
3. "it's", "fault", "hear".
4. It's called not being a ****. Treat people the way you want to be treated. From your useless reply I assumed you wanted to be mocked.

rebuilding something is always faster and easier than building it the first time was.
