Interesting. I had no idea that Swords reduced your chances of getting slimeballs. Good to know, good to know. I always just thought their was quite a slim chance of getting a slimeballz from them.
When you do not get slime balls, it means you are over damaging them. To ensure the dropping of Slime balls use Hand or Bow and arrow, this will not over damage them and instead split them into smaller slimes. Only the smallest slimes drop slime balls and they are dropped randomly from 0-2 per small slime.
I've actually found that if I leave my slime farm to itself, after a few day/night cycles, the slimes die off themselves and have been pleasantly surprised to find slimeballs just waiting for the taking, no killing necessary. Not sure what the proper wait is, but it happens, mos def. I've got over 3 stacks of slimeballs right now, and that's from minimal farming.
The way to go is either punching them, or building a farm that automatically drowns them, suffocates them, or sets them on fire. You want to use methods that cause very little damage in one shot. When using swords you run the risk of an "overkill" which means they won't drop any slime. Also, if you overkill a large slime it will not split into smaller ones.
I guess I am the weird one lol, I use a redstone torch to smack the slimes. For the most part it does the job, and a few occasions when I have used a redstone torch I have not gotten slime balls. But to each his own right. I was clueless on what to use my first time encountering a slime, and learned that swords are not good lol
Yes its overkill damage, you can use a combination of weapons to achieve them splitting though, you may hit a big one with a diamond sword once, and then use your fist. Use the wiki charts for how much damage a weapon does (diamond) and how much HP a slime has.

Retired StaffNot at all a guarantee, it is however more likely you wont overdamage them if you hit them with your hand.
