So I'm trying to understand how this Mob spawning works for the 360 version.
Can you build a 30 story building and place a 2 block high unlit chamber at the top? Or do you have to dig underground in order for spawning to occure in a chosen area?
I want to build a custom grinder but would like to understand the basics of their spawning locations/times/reason
Mobs can spawn 24 blocks to 120 (roughly/I think) away from you. Something like an unlit room can spawn mobs, however to increase the chances, you may need to light/flood/half slab the underground caves within those limits.
My mob drop spawner is out in the middle of the water and 28 blocks in the air. Water streams flush them through a hole in the floor where they fall straight to the ground. I hang around on the ground waiting to collect the drops. My presence at a distance from the spawn pads between 24 and 32 blocks prompts the spawning. ETA: I've also lit up any caves and/or dark areas within a 144 block radius of the spawner. It's working great.
So in the 360 version, i can create a spawn building above ground thats basically 30 blocks away from spawn and it will work?
That should be between 24 and 32 blocks away from you. Mobs will start spawning when you're 24 blocks away. They will stay spawned for sure unless you're more than 32 blocks away. They will still spawn between 32 and 144 blocks away, but they may also randomly despawn at that distance. The sweet zone is between 24 and 32 blocks away from you. The location of dungeon spawners is not relevant. They aren't needed to fuel a mob spawn trap.
The reason it's good to also light up the area within that 144 blocks is so the mobs don't tend to spawn in places other than your mob trap.
Thanks UpUp_Away95, I think I've got it down. Im going to start mining materials for one tonight!
Yes, what UpUp said, ignore the crazy people. Wherever you build it, stand exactly 24 blocks above or under it, as close to the center as possible. That way, more area of your trap can actually be used for spawning.
