Hello all. I just bought the game yesterday, so forgive my ignorance if these appear to be noobish questions... I've had trouble locating gold, diamond, and wheat. In which areas do I need to look to track down these items? My iron equipment is holding up alright but I'd prefer something with a bit more longevity. Thanks.
I normally only find gold and diamond when I go mining and go deep, deep down into the caves.
So you'd have to be heavily prepared for that in case you face monsters (assuming you don't play on Peaceful), bring enough food, have the best armor you have access to (iron), make sure you have weapons, etc etc.
You can also find lapis lazuli and redstone deep down in those caves.
Keep in mind you can mine diamond, redstone, and gold ONLY with an iron pickaxe or better.
As for wheat, all you have to do is gather seeds from the grass and get a hoe, use the hoe next to water and plant the seeds on the sowed ground.
If you step on it while it's growing, it can be ruined so try and block it off from animals and friends you may play with that may accidentally trample on them.
Use your map or if u cant dig down to Bedrock then dig up to layer 10-12 if u dont have a map just count 10 up from bedrock. Then start mining to the left or right which ever way u go ur bound to run into diamond soon gold sucks so dont even bother. Wheat. You know those stupid annoying high grass you see on grassy lands? break those then get a HOE not the girl HOE as in the tool on minecraft. Then hit the Left trigger LT then put the seed down that u get from the grass after u break it dont worry if u dont get a seed when u break down a grass sometimes tehy dont drop seed then just keep doing that make sure u have water right next to the place where u plant the seed and dont walk on it add AgentX44Jobo thats me Ill help u its much easier than explaining it here.
also u can use the minecraft wiki they are not always right but u know its not bad. Also if u need help with the 500 mile thing minecart achivement + the when pigs fly achivement i can help you with that.!
Different ores generate below different levels of the map. The Minecraft Wiki article on ores has a cool table and graph that tells the layers where each may be best found.
The Wiki has lots of great information in it. However, be aware that some of the information on the Wiki doesn't apply to the XBox version just yet. For example, emeralds don't exist yet in the XBox version. They will be added to the XBox version with a future.update. Also, be aware that your map displays the Y coordinate 2 layers above the layer you're standing on. So, if your map says Y12, you're standing on Y10 (your head is at Y12).
As for wheat. When to you punch down tall grass, usually you get nothing; but sometimes you will get some seeds. When these seeds are planted on tilled soil, they will grow into wheat (if you or the animals don't tromp on them beforehand). The Wiki article on wheat seeds can be found here:
In addition, the game has an in game function for displaying hints and tips. If you go to your main menu under "Help and Options" and select options, you can turn a toggle for "Hints" on. Then, while in game, you will see a "What's This" appear at the bottom of your screen when you point your crosshairs at a block. If you press the button indicated (I think it's X) at that point, you will get a brief description of the item and how you can use it in the game.
Wheat is pretty easy and has been addressed. One of the easiest ways I've found for finding precious ores is digging a stair right down to bedrock and digging out a 20x20 square. I prefer digging my own tunnels if I'm playing with monsters on. In peaceful mode take about 40 torches, a stack of wood and a stack of dirt and start caving. You should run into everything you're looking for down deep in the cave. Right about Y 11-14 on your map. Keep an eye out for mushrooms and grab some if you see them!

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
Gold's best use is for powered rails. I do remember seeing somewhere that gold tools actually mine faster that diamond, but they don't last anywhere near as long so it's really not worth it for tools. I would assume gold armor would be the same.
Thanks for all the help guys I appreciate that. I now have myself a minifarm set up for my wheat, and am starting to mine deep into the caves. So far I have mainly been finding iron ore and I recently stumbled across some redstone near a lava pit. Still haven't come across any gold or diamond but I'm sure it will turn up eventually.

gold is for powered rails, also, it mines the faster than a diamond pickaxe. Gold is used for speed mining and rails.
i find diamond tools faster and yeah forgot about rails. dont use them much lol
Sounds like your on the right track.
