Well, I finally got around to building a mob grinder (classic "fall to death" trap) and it's working quite well. As expected, spiders have sometimes survived the fall because i'm sure they are doing some climbing on the walls of the trap, so I have it set up so I can safely kill them with a sword when they do. However, I recently had 1 skeleton also survive the drop and a spider also came down with him. I also killed him with my sword; but only got bones. Could this have been a spider jockey? Are there times when you kill a spider jockey that they just drop the normal skeleton bones and arrows rather than a saddle?
Spider Jockeys will drop bones, arrows, and string. When you kill the skeleton, the spider comes after you. When you kill the spider, the skeleton comes after you. They're two separate entities.
Well is it possible for a skeleton to spawn up there? or did you take precautions to have only spiders spawn up there?
Regular skeletons spawn up there all the time; but all except the one have died from the fall. That's why I'm wondering if this one was a rare spider jockey or whether it may have been a skele who just was lucky enough to have his fall cushioned by a spider.

Darn it. I thought that spider jockeys dropped saddles. I've not been having much luck finding spawners, and a saddle is the one thing I've yet to find in my world. I had to get the flying pig achievement in a different seed; but I wouldn't mind repeating it in my main world just to say I did it there too.
I've had ONE unintentional spider jockey. I'm pretty sure the skeleton came down on top of the spider and got stuck in a sitting position. I laughed when I saw it and killed them both so I could clean the grinder platform out.

That sounds pretty much the same as what happened to me.
I've only seen 2 spider jockeys to date in my world neither of them came from my mob trap though. I have a large wall around my city that I like to hunt from at night and book of them I was able to spot in the distance and then climb down and kill.
I have to admit that I was pretty excited when we spotted the first one. We had probably been playing for a couple months at this point and without the advantage of a high lookout point I doubt we would have seen either of them.
In both cases, when killed, we got arrows and bones but only one of them left string as well.

I've spotted only one (ETA: while I've been playing... I did see one or two while my friend's kids have been playing). The one in my world was at a long distance. He randomly despawned a fraction of a second after I spotted him. Haven't had the privilege yet of killing any of them yet (unless the one in my mob trap was a spider jockey). I guess I was mislead on what they dropped by my friend's kids. They're pretty adamant that another way to get saddles is by killing spider jockeys; and there's really no arguing with 7to 11-year-olds (lol). I do think it would be neat if the saddle did drop when you manage to kill both spider and jockey.
