I love the idea of linked worlds, as like you I don't want to create a new map. Having the ability to bring items from one map to another would be great.
Even though I would love to see the map size increase this is not going to happen anytime soon, unfortunately. But what if you were able to travel from world to world? Being that an infinite world could be quite stressful on a console, why not have a world to world portal, right?
Implementing some sort of world portal so we can travel from world to world would take some brainstorming. For all the people that want an infinite world of possibilities, why not have a big enough world that everyone is happy with and a way to expand with a portal loading screen away from what could possibly become the next best thing.
Only thing now is how to would they do it? Maybe create a new block just for this situation, an option on the title screen that has what maps have portals on and what maps you would like to connect to each other.
What are some of your ideas that could make this work, how would they go about implementing it in the game, and what kind of portal, separate option, teleportation device, ect., do you think they should use to make this option as easily as possible to use?
Yup, this is what I want. I'm holding out hope that this is going to be one of the suggestions they take from the forums. I don't know what the most practical way to implement it would be, but I do think it seems pretty practical. What I envision is a new block that can be crafted, maybe using obsidian and something else. (Or maybe when enchanting comes it could play into it?) And you would just construct your portal in one world and activate it with flint and steel. Then go into the other world, make your other portal, and activate that. Then the game would find the other file with an active world portal and link them.
Every time I see this mentioned everyone seems to feel the same way about it; it seems like a really cool and workable solution to the map size problem.
I like the idea of portals to other maps. I would make them out of gold and maybe a bucket of water to activate them to make them feel like something other than a nether portal, but the problem with portals to other maps on your own xbox is that everyone in a multiplayer game would have to go through it at once since one xbox cannot run two maps at the same time. This can be solved by letting such portals connect to another xbox, but this is only of limited help to single players who want to share multiple sections of their world with others. Still fun and usefull. and could work for people playing alone just fine. It is also probably simpeler to implement than the following.
An alternative to a portal could be a dock and a ship. Ships would be anything in the predefigned dock that is an 'L' of wood planks with iron peirs going down every 3 or so blocks. Anything in the 'L' to a depth of the peirs and up some distance would be the ship allowing for full customization of ships and no need to require some complicated design for them. (Still has a slightly complicated design for the dock, but not very.) Ships would require a helm or some other special block to activate and it would need some system like beds have for getting everyone on board for the save and then load process. The helm would allow for selecting maps with empty docks to move to and creation of new maps with empty docks. This could then be followed by a save and load cycle (with sea travel themed splash screen) where the world is saved in two parts, a ship and the rest of a world with an empty dock, that cannot be reentered without first geting on a ship. The load cycle would load the new world and place the ship in the empty dock.
This would also allow for moving things you cannot put in you inventory like mobs (dogs, vilagers once they are added, ...) and would fit nicely in the pattern of all maps being surrounded with ocean. Ship saves could be opened independantly so you can change direction or reload after some error in the new world or the loading process. Flags like has been edited by creative mode should be caried over on the ship so this cannot be exploited for running up leaderboards.
portals, ships, or both would be great and slightly more entertaining than just bigger maps. (especially since after some point a save - load cycle will be faster than crossing a huge map) Anything that gets me a way to access all the new stuff from future updates with all the stuff I have built up so far without playing with creative mode to just add it would be nice.
Hmm, that's a good point... Maybe the portal could be set up so that instead of standing up, it was laid on the ground. That way it would be easy for multiple players to stand in the field. It could be like the portal was made out of gold or diamond, and the floor under it obsidian. That would also make it feel/look much different from a Nether portal. I feel like it should use obsidian somehow, though, because it would give us another reason to use the stuff.
That boat idea is cool, too! It would be awesome to have a reason to include docks and build boats. You could have awesome port towns...
And yeah, I actually think something like this is almost better than having a bigger map! It inspires me to make worlds with different themes, and also to make cool journeys from world to world. I'd set up portals on different sides of the map, so you'd have to go to a certain 'town' if you want to go to a certain world.
Okay - even though this is the umpteenth time this EXACT SAME thread has shown up, we will run it again....
Portals between worlds - all it does is allow you to carry stuff you found in one world into another world and vice versa. It does not add any real additional building space; it does not guarantee you will find any new or different features; depending on how it's implemented, it doesn't even guarantee new biomes. All it does is allow you to carry stuff you've found to a new world.
Starting a new world in creative mode and giving yourself everything you had in your inventory has the exact same function (and doesn't cost 4J any development time or resources).

But say you want to create an adventure map? Ah-Ha well that there is a great reason to have this option so when time comes when we have an upload option we can share it with the world. It would be packed into a package that had all the maps that were in your adventure. Another thing is what if you don't want to play in creative mode and want to create everything from scratch towns, bridges, caves, ect. and once you have all that EH! I love this seed why not create a world portal from scratch and connect my mostly snow biome world with this mountain terrain map. All I'm saying is people want more space, why not give it to them? Instead of saving/loading your game every time, make it easy with a portal that connects two totally different worlds with different biomes. As the updates keep coming there will be people that complain "I can't get the new biomes in my old map" connecting and old map with a new one with new integrated biomes = no complaints
*shakes head* what is the point of using creative to get everything you need.... beyond the obvious missing peices and just flat out building creatively.
The way i see it is like portal/ship going between worlds I have made. Not for fresh start or uber start which would be using creative. More like taking a few items into peril and well that peril will prolly gut you or well at least me and i would end up loosing that stuff anyway...
It is a nice idea, although the only thing i want size wise on the xbox to get bigger would be height. It is a way to connect several kingdoms in my opinion. I won't say more...

I just thought about how a multiplayer sever could switch worlds. The only way that would work is if the host wants to travel to the other world goes through the portal or whatever the mechanism would be, they could have and option to bring there fellow friends with them or go by there selves by doing so, the other players would be kick as if you were to quit normally. Until they release rental servers that is the only way I can think of that would work.

I've thought about doing this myself. It's kind of like taking your important stuff with you when you explore new lands and it's a simple solution to the "world is too small" scenario.
How exactly do you give yourself items in Creative mode though? If you put the items in your hot bar in Creative and save the file, will they be there when you load up Survival? Do you put the items in a chest in Creative? I'm a noob when it comes to Creative mode.

more like putting in inventory, and more like putting in a chest after that i would presume....

I think if they were to implement either portals, or ships (cool idea by the way!) they would have to make it so the new areas were randomly generated, rather than linking preexisting worlds, just because of the possibility of abuse of the leaderboards, and achievements.

That would make sense. But looking at the screenshots for 360 Creative mode, I'm not really seeing an option for placing stuff in your inventory. Maybe I'm missing something.
That would be just the creative menu when you bring that up. it is more of a select what for hot bar and such. I imagine you can put stuff in inventory as i am sure you can still bring up the inventory of your character more than likely. Other wise it would make making a adventure world quite difficult if you couldn't...><

How would this abuse the leaderboards, as those add up collectively from all worlds in those modes in the first place... O_o so I don't really know how it could be abuse with just going to an old world. And achievements i don't see that being messed up by this, as once you get that you have it no matter what new world you create.
