whenever i trap an animal or a mob in a fenced in area they somehow always spawn out. even if im right next to them in my house. how does this happen? i usually do a one high fence. Maybe i need to do a taller one?
Plus unlike you animals have a mad hops and can jump over just one fence. Two high may keep a chicken around long enough to get an egg or two but that is it.

Animals can jump over a fence IF there are nearby blocks where they can jump down over it from a higher level. Your "Steve" can do the same. Basically, you have to make sure that the fence is taller than all of the blocks within 2 of it (and more if below a taller "cliff" face.
I fenced my one rail lines because animals were getting onto the tracks and colliding with my minecarts all the time (The line seems to run through a very popular spawn point.) Since I fenced it on both sides, I haven't had a single animal on the line. I am, however, really looking forward to installing some level crossings using actual gates. Doors just look bad and mining out fence rails whenever I want to cross is just a PITA.

Yes. I had to bury a chest by my wheat farm at ground level so the animals wouldn't hop the fence into it.
Yes, doors look bad sitting there alone between fence posts, but you can get creative. I use woodplanks stacked 2 high on both sides of the "gate" door, and I extend the fence over the top for good measure. I stack the fence post on each side 3 high, then fence across the top of the wood planks and door. Makes it look a bit like a ranch entrance. You can also use wood half slabs across the top instead of fencing.

Sticky pistons "pull" fenceposts down, so you can use pressure plates to make an auto-opening "gate" in a fence.
Thanks guys, Great suggestions both. However, at this stage of the game, I think I just keep waiting for the gates to arrive with the update. It gives me something to look forward to other than hunger, spider poisonings, and a bunch of deeper holes I can fall into (lol).
