NOTE: This is not complaining about the update, this is just my speculation.
Since I don't think breeding will be in the next update (it wasn't in the trailer), food options will BE LIMITED. Pork and Steak will run out eventually. The only foods that you will be able to grow are melons and bread. If you don't make an egg farm, chickens will run out too.
Once you find melon seeds, it's easy to get a stack of melons, but a stack of bread lasts longer. It takes too many eggs for chicken to be a reliable food source.
This is when automatic wheat farms come in handy. They are rather compact and not too difficult to make and very effective. I have made one to prepare for the update.
I will also be making a somewhat automatic melon farm. (I say somewhat because it's not as automatic as the wheat farm in the fact that it still relies on growth. The harvesting is automatic.)

Auto melon farms are actually more efficient. When you harvest the melon, you don't have to replant it, you just have to wait for the melon to grow off the stem again. With a wheat farm, you have to go and replant the wheat every time you harvest.

The thing that makes melons awesome is the fact that they don't need to be replanted. I meant they rely on growth because there is the initial growth of the melon plant plus the growth of the melon itself over and over.
The wheat farm I was talking about is the one where it uses a bud switch and dispensers and all you need to do his hold down LT. You technically need to replant it, but it grows instantly so the time it takes to grow is much less. This requires a large amount of bonemeal though, so I guess it's not really worth it unless you have access to a skeleton spawner.
I suppose an automatic melon farm can be more efficient than the wheat farm, but in terms of space I would say the wheat farm is more efficient because it is compact. Then again, you get several melon slices from each melon and you don't need nearly as much bonemeal. I guess both have major upsides and downsides.
Sorry if my previous post wasn't really clear. I try to be as clear as possible, but sometimes I'm not. Hopefully I clarified myself now haha.
What?? No love for mushroom soup? Dude, soup and bread is all you need and both can be grown in large quantities with a reasonable resource input (Automatic farms).
I've already got soup to fill a large pool with and bread coming out my ears.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

Don't be hatin'. lol There is always fish and a ready supply of cooked porkchops to be had in the Nether.

Except for the small fact that you have to deal with every pigman in the area (unless you have built a choke point or something like that)
I built a bunker around my Nether portal with windows to kill them out of. Mob grinder supplies all the arrows I could want. Kill them all, collect their pork and get the hell outta there. Or, if there is that pesky Ghast, save and exit and collect when I know I won't die!

IF they don't add breeding in the next update, then what is the point of some of the new available consumables???
Might as well keep the old spawn system for random farm animals knocking on your front door every morning, than permanently wiping out a species off the face of Minecraft.
That's great and all, but won't be of much use in the next update. In the worst "possible" senario, without a way to breed animals, you'll be left with all that land and no chickens, pigs, or cows running around. Once you've... dispatched them, they're gone...FOREVER.

As it is not as common as the other food sources. Don't count out apples. Though it was clearly planted on top of the tree. 4J made it very clear that they re bringing down the apples fall from leaves thing.

Everything in that video is wrong actually, they use the dev kit minecraft. So OP who thinks breeding is coming because of all those cows and pigs, you're most likely wrong. Because they could've easily just use spawn commands and etc to spawn them.

That's the correct attitude!

Retired StaffThey're planning on leaving the animal spawning as it is. And the worst case if they dont, passive mobs will still spawn just at a very low rate.

Fish and rotten flesh are really easy to get, not a problem in my opinion.
