Ok, so on my current map I found a spawner that I've decided to use as the focus to test my ability to make a mob trap. So my question is about the spawner:
Notes:
-The spawner is 'exactly' 30 levels from surface
-I've brought the elevator to surface
-I'm rather against repositioning the elevator or trap itself, unless there's no alternative.
-My world is like 50% or so tundra biome.
Basic Questions:
How does the spawning work for the spawner?
Do we have a radius that the spawner can spawn in?
My thought is I can just move the base floor up..4? I think 28 is the spawn radius around me, though again I have no idea...I just know that standing on the surface does not bring any skeletons up to die... >_< I had some..issues originally..it's late and I didn't feel like reworking the whole thing but I tweaked it to fix the initial issue.
So I guess my real question is more about how mobs spawn, and whether or not my problem is based on the depth of the spawn field or just the size of it (that I've yet to finish off correctly).

You have to be within 16m (16 blocks) for a mob spawner to actually spawn things.
That is why people usually make these kinds of mob spawners...
