No you do not have to have a mob spawner (spinning pig thing) To my knowlege each of the mob spawners in dungeons only spawn one certain mob anyway. You can build a dark tower or room or underground area without the spawner and you shouldn't have any problems getting mobs to spawn in it. Just as long as you keep in dark enough for them to spawn and big enough area for them to spawn in.
it can be built right now (without duping - I did it in a couple of days including the mining). If you do a good job of lighting up the caverns beanth where you build it (or build it underground like I did) it will usually give you about a stack of each mob drop every 15 minutes or so.
I built a really AWESOME mob spawner that is even appealing to the eye.. If you would like more info just send me a message and I will gladly explain to you how I did it or let you into my world to see it.. I do not always use my mob spawner.. When I am in need of mob Items I will set my difficulty on Hard and stand in a little glass box and watch the mpbs fall for awhile.. then once I am done.. I set my difficulty back on peaceful.

because i want to build a place where mobs spawn near my house.....to get gun powder, arrows and all that stuff...
