The only games I've seen that i've seen that used updates to add new content is MW3, Skyrim, and Minecraft.
I don't think the others really compare though, I know Skyrim doesn't. Going from playing 1.6.6 to playing the PC release version, there have been so many changes it practically feels like a sequel.
considering it was their news cause it was a new decision it wasnt going to. and also you will note the new thing also doesnt say it will be 1.9 it will be some of the features that would have been in the 1.2.3 update so they dont have to follow directly with the pc as they can pick and choose for this mid way update
That's what I thought. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I heard the original plan was to do a huge update, jumping from 1.8.2 to 1.2.3, so they would be able to use their free updates more sparingly. And this was a month ago, so 4J must have mentioned something. That or the guy that told me just happened to be the reincarnation of Nostradamus.
I would actually prefer bigger updates that take longer, I'm in no hurry. Plus, if it does indeed mean they only have so many free updates, I would think everyone would approve of doing it this way. And maybe, just maybe, not whine and bellyache as much. I very much doubt that last part though.
Their actual pattern of past updates has been 1) original release in May; 2) bug fix in June; 3) update 1.7.3 in mid-July; 4) the August bug fix; and 5) the 1.8.2 update that we are currently waiting for that has been a little delayed. I don't think it's an "extra" update, just a re-purpose of an already planned bug fix update.
The way I'm reading this tweet is that 4J are hoping that the 1.8.2 release won't have too many bugs and they can then include some 1.9 content in an already anticipated "bug fix" update about a month after the release of 1.8.2. It just follows their previous pattern, keeping in mind that they did include the lighting package in the August bug fix update.
IF the 1.8.2 update had made it before mid-September, then I think probably the plan all along was to release a "bug fix" sized update early in October and then release the 1.2.3 update BEFORE the Christmas shopping rush begins (US Thanksgiving Day Weekend, 3rd week in November). With the delay in the 1.8.2 update, they are probably hoping that it will be essentially bug free and they can make up some of the lost ground by adding some features into the "bug fix" and still hopefully get to 1.2.3 in time to capitalize on the Christmas rush.
Fair point on its own, but show me a list of games released on PC and 360 where the 360 version was so far behind it required updates to bring its content current.
Most games on the consoles are, at most, a matter of weeks behind the current version.
Seriously. Most other games would have been released and we'd have been told it was a final version.
probably because it was the final version... Would you rather have every game be released during beta, and then have sporadic updates to the content until the game is actually finished? no? me niether.
The only games I've seen that i've seen that used updates to add new content is MW3, Skyrim, and Minecraft.
how many ports need several updates after release to catch up to the content of the original title?
what free content was added to skyrim/mw3, btw? i have both but never noticed anything extra added. you can add gotham city imposters to the list of free updates, though.
MW3, Elder Scrolls IV and V (Oblivion and Skyrim) had DLC that added new content that you had to pay for.
All those games had updates, but they were generally bug fixes and at most, introduced marginal additions (kill cam on bow shots, and mounted combat for instance).
MC360 updates give bug fixes (natch), new blocks, new gameplay aspects. All as updates, and at 1-2 months per release, with greater frequency than those other titles.

because it was released unfinished... people keep forgetting to mention that. Im sure lots of games would have a frequent content updates, if they were released half-finished.
if i recall correctly, someone asked them if there would be a smaller update between 1.7.3 and 1.2.3 and they replied with "where looking into it" or something like that. i really don't care, i think once 1.8.2 comes out, it will hold me over for several months.

It's a very strange way of doing things. The opportunity to play on Xbox is great, but the itch got the better of me and I bought it on PC as well.
That point shouldn't really stand with Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition. It will not matter how far behind the PC it is because it's no longer following the PC like everyone though. After 1.2.3, Mojang and 4J are going to sit down and decide where to go with the Xbox 360 Edition, rather than it following the PC.
4J started so far behind because they started the game at 1.6.6. The PC version is now 1.3.2 and will soon be 1.4. We never would have caught up anyways with the restrictions Microsoft has on the frequency of updates.
So you should be glad you bought both because soon, they will be very different games.
