Microsoft had a limit on number of free updates you can put out for Xbox. So sooner or later, they are either not going to update anymore, or have to charge for DLC... So how many more updates do you think there will be?
And Microsoft must be kicking themselves for making that deal. I don't think they realised just how popular the game would get.
Part of the appeal of Minecraft is the support it gets from the developers, and limiting the updates they can give out removes that appeal. Microsoft published Minecraft anyway, so they got tons of money anyway.
i think its was in the pax interview with notch that explains that they worked it out so all updates will be free
No, Notch said that usually Microsoft doesn't do free updates at all. That was what they worked around, he never specified whether it was a limited amount or not.
Though, since apparently this is so unusual, I would assume it's a limited number of freebies.

They are getting a limited number of free updates. We don't know how many that is though. For all we know, they could have used them up because of the bug fix updates. Keep in mind, it will cost 4J to put out the updates, it won't cost us anything.

Actually, it's not that uncommon. i can think of two major titles that have had substantial updates at no cost to the customer, the ones that come to mind are MW3 and Skyrim

No "updates" cost money for the players, unless they are marketed as DLC. That doesn't mean they're free updates. Microsoft wants money, they don't care if it comes from the devs so they can release a patch for the game, or if it comes from us in the form of buying DLC.

True, but i'm sure 4j has no problems paying the bills. there raking in boat loads of money. even those who have already bought the game usually end up buying the skin packs.

Retired StaffCause the $80,000,000 Dollars the game made will not pay for updates.... BTW that's 4,000,000 sales times $20 a game.
