So I was planning to play a Hard Survival map before 1.8 but the problem is, theres really no goal... I was wondering what is an idea for a resonable goal?
My thoughts (Items would be added to a collection chest until I reached the goal.)-v
30 Glowstone Blocks
25 Iron Blocks
10 Gold Blocks
5 Diamond Blocks
What else could I add? Maybe other ideas for goals?
On hard, armed with only a wooden sword and no mob grinder collect a stack of tnt. Too easy? i dunno I'll think of something else. lol.
Achievement Unlocked: We're going streaking!
Run from one corner of your map to the opposite corner during the night with no armor! Psychadelic mushrooms and cheap beer optional! * On hard, maybe no weapon? Better kite like a man!
Ooh! How about a long-term goal:
Achievement Unlocked: Dark Tower Rising
Construct a tower of obsidian to the build-height limit (at least 3x3, this one would probably require some nether exploration)
Just some stuff I came up with off the top of my head, I usually I just do 404 when I want a different challenge

Oh yes, must collect 30 blocks of glowstone as well! Thank you for reminding me! All without dying.
By the way, I'm going to try the 404 challenge and video tape it!
I always thought it would be cool to have a compilation of self-enforced challenges to try out, too bad most people don't seem to interested in it. They'd rather post antoher topic about the next update : /

Getting iron, gold and diamond blocks, isnt really a challenge, just go strip mining for a long time,
if you want a good challenge make sure you dont do the ones that are about collecting items expect fighting ones,
a nice challenge would be trying to survive without building houses.
Or try to foritfy a Npc village, stronghold or nether stronghold, or all three.
for the obsidian challenge, woohoo getting lava, All the time! youll get bored of that really quick.
This is in the 360 version forum you know... And I wouldn't be strip mining, I'd be going into caves to find it.
secure a 100 x 100 block area on the surface and build a city on it
no open spaces remaining larger than 10 blocks across to the next "built" structure
all of it on the surface. basements and tunnels are fine, but each structure must have traditional surface entrances
players must survive nights without stack-jumping to a safety perch or bricking themselves in for the night. To hide, must be in a shelter with a doorway (with/without actual door).
no DupeGlitching
Limit to one respawn
The expected outcome for success is a walled region that's 100x100, well lit. exposed to the sky, and populated by buildings. No monsters should be getting into the region from the outside, spawning in, or coming up from the basement or interior of a building.
the limit on respawning should set the focus to building and defending from monsters, not running around killing and dying willy nilly. You get one screw-up. Whether that be by accidental fall, surprise Creeper ambush or overly aggressive game play.

To be a challenge, your world seed should be randomly generated (using a seed where others have posted the locations of things would certainly lessen the toughness of any survival task).
I have easily found 7 diamonds in a single pocket in a cave and regularly come back from relatively short mining excursions with 15 or so in my inventory. So this number seems really low to be a challenge. Ditto re the gold and iron.
Since you want this to be a "survival" challenge, how about adding in collection limits of the items that the monsters drop; but disallow construction of a mob grinder or mob traps. That is, the items need to be collected using hand to hand sword combat. Likewise, add in an about of food items that has to be left over in the inventory at the end of the challenge.
How about mining a stack of Obsidian? I always play on Hard because anything below Normal is just to easy and boring. I usually set goals like a stack of Obsidian, portal to nether, 20-40 glowstone, full set of diamond tools and armor, 2 story house, connecting Minecart rail system, wheat farm, a stack of tnt(no mob grinding), and sometimes making a cobblestone generator. and if i die I delete my world like on hardcore mode on PC. This is just the way I play and my own set of challenges that I set for myself and sometimes I make them harder to keep my interest. Either way it's fun for me tho and I don't get the urge that people have to play on easy and peaceful. it just seems so boring to just build and never encounter mobs

Retired StaffI'd also add that you can only torch an area within 10 blocks of a structure, so no lighting the place up, either.
Try surviving using only leather armor and stone swords, and make it a point to fight monsters that get close enough, intead of running.
Keep yourself up to date with the Minecraft Forum rules!

I figured most of it would have to come from the nether, I guess dodging fireballs is lame and fighting ghasts is lame?
What would you suggest as a challenge sir?
