Okay, so we can all agree that the lighting for redstone is completely pointless, right? What if 4J released a texture pack where redstone items didn't emit any light (except redstone lamps, of course) it would be amazing! Several of my friends experience pretty bad lag in my worlds, and I haven't even built anything that big yet.
I honestly don't care what the textures look like, it could even be the default, minus redstone lighting. Sort of like a bonus that people could use when they go to worlds with extensive redstone. Maybe they could also get rid of piston animation. That could potentially be even more useful.
I believe the redstone lightning up isn't always the problem for lag.
This would be very hard to see if your circuit is working properly too, I made a vertical jeb door, If I didn't have the lights telling me which line wasn't working then my circuit would still be dead.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
- One likes to test ones pistons by pulling ones levers and seeing if they work. (a lot of ones, i know)
- One can see whe one´s circuits are correctly built by seeing they´re glow when trigered.
Edit: actually i take back what i said about those being bad ideas, thats unnessesarily rude, in a better choice of words: those ideas are not convenient for me and i dont see 4j adding a "texture pack" with so little changes, the community (including me) would take it as they were mocking us.

You could still tell if it's working, just because the lighting is removed doesn't mean the textures don't change. And it does make quite a significant difference when it comes to lag. If it's such a bad idea, why do people remove redstone lighting on the PC version all the time?
Pistons would still work, they just wouldn't have the full animation. It would go from retracted to extended, you just wouldn't see it move. I think you guys are just against it because you haven't seen it done before. Redstone lighting is completely pointless, it does nothing except put extra stress on your console.
EDIT: I don't mean a texture pack to buy. This alteration would take literally a few minutes. I think it would be a nice alternative default texture. Or maybe they could release it as a texture pack specifically for redstone engineers, where all the textures are plain, with nice smooth borders. Maybe throw in some fancy looking repeaters and torches, and redstone dust that actually looks like wiring.
Hmmm....interesting ideas cowboy. I for one would be terribly disappointed with redstone torches not emitting light as I use them for low level decorative lighting and for lighting up my mob grinder, and I enjoy the piston animation (when it works :P). However, I have an idea for you, how about instead of a texture pack thing, how about a "low lag" option or something added to the menus? Maybe even an option to turn off redstone lighting and piston animations independently? Perhaps that would solve your issues and maybe be a little easier to implement.

I was kind of thinking that. That's basically what it would be, a slightly modified default texture.
I still think it would be cool to have a texture pack specifically for redstone use though. Really basic, plain textures, dust just being a solid red line. It's kind of annoying when people say that this is a pointless idea. And judging that the drop in framerate isn't that bad, based off of piston doors, auto-farms, or whatever.
In my worlds, playing offline, the frame drops aren't that bad for me, occasional jitters when turning the camera, and placing two blocks instead of one. (That part is annoying.) But online, it's a lot worse, especially for anyone that joins, they double, sometimes even triple step, can't place/break blocks, etc. My main world has lagged people out of the game completely, on many occasions.
I'd love to see an option for texture packs that allows you to choose the textures you want to use, like default grass, pack 1 stone, pack 3 glass, pack 2 obsidian, etc. I love default, but hate the glass, perhaps gravel.
i don't think we're even gonna get any texture packs. I personally haven't heard any word about them
Oh, I would bet money that we do. I just don't think it will be any time soon. A game like Minecraft is bound to have DLC, and with how easy it is to make things like skin packs and texture packs, those will probably be the first DLC to come along.
Didn't 4J say something about texture packs after 1.82?
