you can make ice in a snow biome by making 1 square blocks popping water in and letting it freeze but as above poster said no farming it til enchanting comes along next year
i think enchanting will not come next year i thing its gonna release 3 or 4 months
A friend and I were messing around with this last night. You need a snow biome to begin with. You can use sticky pistons to lift the ice blocks out of the water and with some time and patience move them to another location. You have to refill the trench with water and wait for it to refreeze and start over. We found that 7 blocks seems to be the max that can be lifted out and moved successfully. We were still working on the process but there is promise there.

If you want to give up the leaderboards, you could switch to creative and place ice blocks on your survival world. Or just place them in a regular creative world. You will have to wait for the next update for Creative. To get Ice legit in survival, you will need a silk touch pickaxe. Which we will get in 2 updates from now.
i actually already adressed this in a previous thread, you can infact farm ice, ill post the image of my ice farm for you.
so its pretty basic, its a 2x2 pool the base is built of pistons and ther are 2 pistons pushing the blocks outward once they are pushed up.. from there you need only stack them and use a simple piston train to move them to your build site. but be warned, you can not use any sort of lighting aside from a redstone torch or redstone ore itself anywhere near these blocks. they melt.

I highly doubt that, considering the next update will be coming out this month.
Not even in 1.9. Silk touch with ice was removed until full release 1.3 when it was re-added.
