What this version of the game lacks is any sort of end boss. I know we're getting the Enderdragon once we get the End, but how about something that is more of an epic challenge without requiring it's own dimension or being the size of a small airplane? Giants are a possible contender for this role, they'd be harder to kill than a regular hostile mob, giving you at least some semblance of challenge.
My best idea would be the Wizard. On the highest point of every map a moderately sized mossy cobblestone tower would spawn. Within would be a chest containing a crystal sphere. If the player leaves the sphere untouched, the wizard stays imprisoned. But if the player takes the sphere, it spawns a wizard somewhere on the map who can cast fireball spells like Ghast fireballs, heal by eating a food item, and summon mobs. Health will regenerate if left alone, so if you fight and flee, he'll eventually be back up to peak strength. Once vanquished, his drop would be the crystal sphere. You can keep it in inventory or put it in any chest.
Once placed in a chest, so long as the sphere is kept in a chest, the wizard stays vanquished. But if you take it from the chest, the Wizard respawns somewhere in the caverns and will then seek to reclaim his tower. If the tower is vacant, he is back in place. If it is occupied, he will build a smaller tower somewhere else and launch occasional attacks against his former lair (maybe during lightning storms for dramatic flair). His chest can also contain items for enchantment (enchanting bench, bookshelves, XP potions). (Considering that we're not getting enchantment until later than the next update, might as well wishcast.)
The benefits are that you get a more challenging Boss character to fight, and using the crystal sphere spawn dynamic, players can fight the wizard as many times as they want, and if players don't want to fight them they can leave the sphere untouched when discovered. Plus it will be a more intelligent mob, and give the game a dramatic villain for the player to fight.
no. no wizards. the idea isnt terrible, i mean pc did JUST get an update really similar to this, the wither, but for the love of god no wizards.
edit: and im not sure how fighting a flying dragon with a ridiculous amount of health that heals itself off of multiple explosive orbs, each of which are shoved onto the top of super high towers, all while in the middle of a dimension filled to the brim with teleporting mobs that rape you the instant you look at them isn't "challenging enough."

We don't have that yet. And while it will be challenging, it's something that you have to seek out in it's own dimension. There's only one time and place you're going to fight it. The Wizard (or if you prefer, Evil Overlord/Knight/Baron/Scientologist) is an overworld mob that can spawn multiple times yet doesn't go down with two hits from a diamond sword. It's a middle ground between a boring creeper and the "have to journey across dimensions to get a decent challenge" God-monster.
i kinda like this idea. i would add that whoever took out the crystal from his chest can be the only one who can touch it [transporting it from chests etc.]
From my understanding, we'll be getting everything from 1.2.3 before we get additional content. And personally, I consider the dragon good enough of a boss that we don't really need more.

Thoughts?
My take on the Wizard:
