How do you farm mushrooms? I have taken a liking to digging an 11x11 room that. Plenty of space to fight off monsters (also more room for monsters to spawn unfortunately). What do you do?
I've done a couple of things. I've re-purposed mines to grow mushrooms. I like to dig out square room when mining, it helps me from getting lost. When I'm done I might plant some mushrooms, remove the torches and put in just enough redstone torches to keep the area from overflowing with monsters.
I've planted and let them grow wild under trees in areas that were good for them.
I've just harvested them in the nether naturally.
I've built dark rooms above ground to grow them in and just poured water on them when I wanted to harvest them.
The method I like the best though, is to make something like this underground in the place I have my slime pit. I block off each bay to keep them dark and to corner the monsters that will spawn in there. When I flush the bays, the water channel terminates in a rig that allows the mushrooms to drop and be gathered but keeps the monsters that were flushed with them behind a barrier that is three blocks high with an empty block on the bottom. I can stand there, kill the monsters (reducing what damage they can do to me) and there drops float right to me.......
I takes a bit more work but I was curious about water mechanics and pistons and really like the results.
I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
I use bonemeal on a mushroom, grow a large mushroom, then break the entire thing. Returns a ton a mushrooms very fast at the cost of 1 bonemeal. Good deal for me.

Can you even make big mushrooms on the xbox 360 version yet?

Wrong board. You can't use bonemeal on a mushroom for it to grow large yet on the 360.
