I apologize if this question was asked already. I'm new to this game and this forum, and I did look for a thread concerning this before I posted. My question is, I'm building a minecart ride at a rather high altitude and I was wondering if there's an easier way to place blocks in the sky? Normally, I just stack them until I get where I want to be and destroy all the blocks under the bridge so it's suspended in mid-air.
When i build any extentions in the sky I always crouch that way you won't fall off the block you are on. Click the Right Stick on the controller and that will put you in a crouch position. Walk backwards the way you want the bridge to extend and you can place blocks next to the block you are standing on without falling.
what you are doing is generally referred to as "scaffolding" (AFAIK) and it's really the only method we have now because we do not have creative mode with flying.
After the next update (for which we do not have an ETA), we will have creative mode (the ability to place unlimited blocks) and flight (the ability to ignore gravity on command).
However, if you open a world in creative mode, you will be precluded from gaining achievements or leaderboard stats on that world, even if you transition it back to survival on a different load.
If you crouch (sneak) by pressing in the right stick, you can walk beyond the edge of what you've built and add more blocks to it. You can't fall off. You can build straight up and place ladders under you this way too. Hop and place a block under you; back up and place a ladder in the front of the block you just placed. Much faster than the silly spiral scaffolding method I was using before I learned this.
"Sneaking" - Stand on a block already at the altitude you want, depress the right stick straight down. You'll see your avatar in the upper left corner go into a crouching position. Then move slightly so your off the edge of the block you're standing on and looking down and back towards it. Now you can place a block right beside the one you were just standing on. In sneak mode, you shouldn't fall unless you wander way too far off the block.
also, you can utilize pistons. they push out up to 12 blocks at a time, but can then be moved forward to continue building the bridge. I used this method to cross a wide gap in the nether.
Sorry if that was confusing lol

Edit: ninja'd!
