Earlier I had a thread about making servers possible in a Battlefield 3
type of way. 4J had an interview with G4TV recently, and look what they said!
"One thing that is in discussion at the moment is the possibility of having servers. Similar to the Battlefield 3's 'rent-a-server' [feature]," Burns said. "If we can shift the work off to [an external] server, then I think we can open up quite a bit more. It's definitely something that I want to look at, and it's now something that Microsoft are quite keen to look at as well. So fingers crossed, we might get there."
So now this is a talked about possibility 4J may be considering!
I certainly wouldn't mind dedicated servers and might even go so far as to spring for one, provided server admis had enough proper controls.
That being said, one thing that bothered me was how the conversation seemed to link some of the possible improvements to rented server capacity. For instance, I interpreted the interview to imply that one of the ways they were considering addressing the world size issue was through rented servers (which would remove the server burden from your local xBox). I think that's a great idea, but I worry about how such a change would impact my ability to play if I'm not connecting to my (or someone else's rented server).
Taking a very extreme example, there are no BF3 official DICE servers anymore - everything is rented. If ALL rented servers switch to include CQ and AW maps (which I have not bought), I will no longer be able to play BF3 because there are no servers running my content package. By analogy - if the implementation of rented servers in MCXBLA makes it so that I have to rent a server or join someone else's, I will be a sad blooz player.
One nice thing about that article is that it finally confirmed what everyone knew about the world size discussion. It is an issue of available RAM after all, but not because of the size of the world save, per se. Rather, it's because the xBox has to run both the client and the server simultaneously. Remove the server process to a much bigger machine and you're right back to MCPC type world files (which messes really well with the impending ANVIL format shift after this update, eh?)

Anvil may actually allow the worlds to be a little bit bigger because it uses memory much more efficiently than the current map generation. One problem with the worlds now is that chunks are still loaded even when no one is there. With Anvil, it renders the chunk so you can see them in the distance but doesn't actually physically bring it into the game until someone is in the chunk (or near it).
Why are you happy for me? There have been many other statements
of servers like this as mustache guy said, I'm just the one that brought it to
the forums.

What do you think he means when he says "we could open up alot more"? Do you think if they shift to open servers then a world increase could be in the cards? Maybe I'm reading too much into that one sentence but to me it seems like a greater possibility w/rent-a-servers

What I was thinking was increasing the player limit size.
But hey, 4J has a lot of secrets up their sleeves, so who knows?
Increase player size and have the server available to join 24/7 even without the host being on.
Anyone who says that'll make griefing so much easier, just switch it to friends only. If your friend griefs your world well then you shouldn't be friends with him in the first place. Rawr

I love the fact how involved with the community 4j is though. They definitely are a great game developer studio.

Actually that makes more sense w/rent-a-servers. I guess I have such a want/need for worlds to be enlarged that I overlook the the most obvious of logical answers

Opinions on the matter?

I think a feature like that would definitely be great to have. Hopefully something comes out of their discussions!

Quite a few people have mentioned Battlefield 3 to them on their Twitter.
they're considering the idea.
Definitely wouldn't get your hopes up.
But hey, ya never know.
I haven't been playing much. Hopefully AK will change that.

If they do decide to add rentable servers, I hope they're not over priced.
4j make it f ing free
