So the y on the map is the level your. So say I want to go to level 16 to mine some diamonds. All I do is look at the number to the right of the y and go down till it hits 16.
Don't worry, when I first started and found a lot of diamond, I made every diamond tool(Don't do that by the way. Diamond pickaxe and diamond sword is your best bet)

A diamond axe can also be quite useful, especially if you have a tree farm.
Lol you can dig straight down in a 1x2 pattern (2x2 is best) if you have ladders and you never mine the block you are standing on. alternate back and forth. you can hit bedrock in less than 5 min and never fall in lava once then climb back up your ladders. look at what level you start digging at whatever the y value is thats how many ladders you'll need to get back up. never mine straight up though or you get lava shower.
edit: it's a good idea to carve into the sides of the walls for every 10 blocks you descend to make little checkpoints. this system makes for a nice elevator shaft later on
Don't quite understand why "Y"=Elevation...in surveying they always list their elevation value as the "Z" (X & Y is the northing and easting).
I thought the same thing only I was thinking back to algebra geometry and doing vectors in 3 space lol. z is supposed to be coming out the page not y lol.

I tried to sign my name here, but all I managed to do was ruin my computer screen.
The number next to Y= the height your head is at. So if you dig down to where your map says Y=16 then you are standing on 14, since you are two blocks tall.
I'm still trying to figure out why the sun rises in the north... or is it that the top edge of the map is east? Either way, it's a little weird...
Never thought about that. Well nobody said
the world of Minecraft is actually Earth. It might just
be on a blocky world with similar inhabitants of Earth.
I just realized we're discussing about logic in Minecraft.

lol, I'm the same. Hardly ever fall into lava, or a cave full of hostile mobs.
