I'm always impressed with the stuff people manage to create in Minecraft (and in Halo) so I've decided to spend the weeks waiting for the update on a big project. I'm attempting to create all the biomes that exist in Minecraft on the 360 version as of now in a humongous underground cavern. I've researched the biomes that I want to include (Forest, Beach, Ocean, Desert, Taiga/Tundra, Nether) as well as adding my own/leaving room for other biomes (Rivers, Ice/Snow Caves, Jungle, Mushroom). So far I have a 50 x 50 block wide shaft that goes all the way down to the 32y coordinate (just tall enough for jungle trees).
My questions right now are mostly aesthetic, but:
How should I arrange the layout of the biomes within the cave (anything I should avoid)?
Real snow or snow blocks in the cave?
Are there any good ways to hide lighting but still have the light? Specifically glowstone blocks.
Has someone made something similar before?
Any other awesome ideas or advice?
Depending on how big the cave is, I'd try to spread them out evenly so that it goes from moderate to harshest environment. Also, if you're going to use snow, use snow blocks and be careful about how you do the lighting (because they will obviously melt.)
This sounds like a pretty kick-ass project. I'd love to see it sometime.

Current Project: Xbox 360 Edition TARDIS & Bowie Base 2 (based on the Waters of Mars)
If you want to (i woulden't) dupe tnt for the diging.
So far I've done everything by hand. It lets me do things to my specifications and I've never been that fond of mining with dynamite. Blowing **** up though, that's a different story. =)

That sounds like a good idea, will give it some thought. Although, I don't think snow blocks melt, unless you meant actual snow. Thanks, if you'd like to see it, my gamertag is under my avatar pic. I'm also going to be taking WIP pictures occasionally, just to see how it progresses.
I'm doing something similar. I'm not recreating the biomes, but I'm creating a large underground area just above bedrock. Parts of the area are "realistic" (grass, trees, etc), but parts of it are not realistic ( a large lake made of obsidian).
Anyway, one of the unrealistic aspects, that is actually my favorite part, is the sky made out of wool. It's time consuming as you have to find a lot of lapis lazuli to make light blue wool ( though I've found a ton of it clearing out the area) and then you have to go around finding sheep to dye and shear (when you a clear out a large area underground and have grass, sheep will spawn, so you don't have to constantly run up and go sheep wandering).
I've used the clouds I've made (some of which are just normal looking clouds, some of which are shaped like stuff from the game) which are 1-2 blocks below the blue sky to hide lighting. It's not enough to light up the whole area, but it helps. I made the sun out of glowstone with orange and yellow wool around the glowstone blocks. Stairs are also a good way to hide lighting as light seeps through them.
on your sun... you could always use jack o lanterns too. I want to start a project like this eventuall... Probably when creative comes out. Good Luck and when its finished I would like to see some pics.
you can hide glowstone in trees to great effect. a friend of mine pulled it off so well that I was very confused where all the light in front of his house was coming from. leaves do dissipate light a little bit so don't bury them too deep. a glowstone with one leaf block on each side still casts lots of light and is extreamly hard to spot.

Sounds awesome. I'll keep the lighting idea in mind.

I could totally see how that would work! Thanks for the tip.

oh you are quite welcome. definatly upload some pics of this underground world as you are building. I got grass and trees growing at bedrock level in one of my worlds which I thought looked very cool. I can't wait to see different biomes underground.

Can't wait to start working on them, am still making the space needed to accomodate them.
Currently I am grinding away at mining the area needed for this project, a 200 x 200 block area, which is a 40,000 block surface area. Add on to that the 30 block ceiling, which brings the block count up to 1,200,000. On top of that, I'm considering lowering the floor of the entire area to the 20y coordinate (12 blocks) which, if I did, would be 1,680,000 blocks.
So yah, I could definitely use the help, as two or more people makes things go a lot faster, dynamite or not. I'll add you the next time I'm on.

As a tip to save you time later you should build a staircase of dirt down to this area that you are clearing. Make sure this dirt staircase is attached to dirt with grass on the surface. Light the staircase all the way down. Have a small patch of dirt at the bottom of the staircase as a starting point for your grass. This is the only way to get grass underground and it takes a little while for it to spread down the staircase. Once you have grass forming on your dirt patch at the bottom you can get rid of the staircase plus animals will start spawning on that so you can start collecting wool for your artificial sky.

One of the chunks I have down there spawns wolves consistently, it's pretty sweet. I don't think I will have an artificial sky, as I was considering having stalactites/stalagmites (whichever ones hang from the ceiling. I want it to look like actual biomes within a cave.

Absolutely beautiful. now get a small tree farm down there and you'll never have to return to the surface until your clearing operation is complete. Also great idea with the stalactites (those are the ceiling ones) I think that will look better in the end. Kind of a Jules Verne sort of thing
