Up until Minecraft 1.9 prerelease 1, the affectiveness of armor was dependant on the durability of armor. In other words, the more damaged the armor was, the less damage you were protected from. After Minecraft 1.9 prerelease 1, all armor gave you a certain ammount of protection based on what type of armor (Diamond/Iron/gold/etc.) you were wearing. And even nearly dead armor still protects you the same as newly crafted armor.
I know 1.8 is before 1.9 prerelease 1 but I remember hearing that some newer features were going to be brought over. Does anyone know if the newer armor calculation is going to be one of these features we get with 1.8?
