Basically I'm making a sewer system under my town and I'm just wondering if anyone else has any tips on how to make it better? Just some thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated!
For aesthetics, I like to make my sewers, and a 5 block radius hemisphere, and then when I get to the end of it, to "stop" the "sewage", I like to put fences at the end block of the inside of the hemisphere (I'd replace the fences with iron bars when they come out for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition).

Well, when it comes right down to it, there's really only one type of item that sewers transport and that's...oops, let's not go there. j/k
Seriously though, to the OP: if you're not going to use the sewer for any kind of function, what's the point in creating it? To have something "authentic" in an urban environment that nobody will ever see?
You didn't really specify how you'd like to make it better. Better in what way?
I think this is a cool idea, I might use it someday. Here's my input.
I'd make it large enough to feel "real". At least 3 or 4 high, with 1 wide walks on either side and a 2 wide stream.
The fence used as a grate system is a good idea.
I would also make a point to run the water for item transport to a central location.
Each building could have a waste disposal hole where items fall into the sewer and are transported to the "cleaning facility".
Making a mob farm that drops loot (or mobs!) into the sewer would be a nice addition.
Mushrooms (and possibly an automated mushroom farm to drop them in the trenches).
Man holes
A giant rat statue with redstone torch for eyes (hidden in a dark tunnel of course)
Recessed torch lighting for that creepy feel.
Stone walls, cobblestone floors, and mossy cobble at intersections or for detail
Broken or missing sections of sewer that give way to dirt washouts
Having the sewers actually serve to transport stuff to a central "Processing" location I think would be pretty darn sweet. Have all your Mob traps and farms all dump into the system and then transport them to a area that you can use to store all your loot.
Basically I just want it to make it look authentic, though I may try to make itso you can item drop, and I have made manholes and a level system so you can cross at certain points by hitting a lever. The way I have it set up is; two walkways either side that are 1wide2high and then 2wide3tall for the waterways. It is currently all made out of stone, but I am planning on changing that to add cobble and mossy cobble.
