I built a cacti trap around my house to protect it and while testing it by lureing a zombie into it I became stuck and died and lost all my stuff. (diamond sword diamond pick tnt gold ore full ser of iron armor and lots of other stuff)
LOL! Dude, that sucks! Cactus traps are so hard on the players too. I played with kids on their world and they had gone hog wild with cactus. It was so bad there was just no way to collect any monster drops because they would get caught in the cactus too.

I kill myself in my mob traps all the time. It happens so often, I call it "real-life testing", rather than failing. Usually it happens when the machine is up and running, so at least all my items get flushed to a safe drop zone for easy retrieval.

As a side note, a lava blade grinder works great, except for wool. Wool burns up in one. My cacti grinder has no problem with wool. I may not get all the drops, but I get "all" the drops.
My main house has both a cactus wall and a cactus moat. The onyl downside is that my dogs occasionally fall in and kill themselves. I get poinked (as my son would say) on the cactus every once in a while - but never to the point of death.
