I need help to do a mob spawning trap without a mob spawner. They use dark rooms and flowing water to take mobs to lava which kills them and sends the loot down in water to you. If anyone can show me pics/videos or give me advice it would be nice :D.
You need a large room. In that room, build several "spawning pads". Spawning pads are usually 8x8 pads that are two blocks higher than where your canals would be. Leave at least two blocks of space between each spawning pad. For the canals, use water, and make sure that they all flow towards the center of the room where your main canal would be. Use slabs to make it so you don't have to keep dropping down one level.
Canals:
The water will force mobs onto the half step. Don't worry about the mobs standing still on them. Other mobs will be forced along the same path and force them into the next stream.
At the end of your main canal, put a lava blade. That is a contraprtion that uses blocks, signs, and lava to make the lava flow stick out so that mobs hit it. They look like this:
(not my pic... I stole it off the internetz)
After the mobs hit the lava blade, use another canal to carry the drops to you.

Great post, slackathor. Thanks. Now I have a clear mental image of this approach. I did not know about the slabs helping to maintain the water current without going down a step. That will come in handy in lots of places.
I have a very effective mob grinder in my world. I love to show it off because i took a decent amount of time and its the biggest project ive ever made. I get about 730 items per hour in the day time. I would like to show you so you could get an idea, or i could help build.

I just finished a moderately sized gravity grinder and love it! It's basically using the 8x8 pad and canal idea, making multiple room one above the other and a central tunnel that goes 25 blocks under ground to a small room with waiting area. Mobs fall, die and I quickly collect their loot. And it was simple to make.

This thread bores me.
