I've just started playing about a week ago and killing creepers isn't cutting it... I've tried to make a mob tower trap but totally failed on the way I set it up...any other suggestions?
Swords or bow and arrows. I like to do things the old fashioned way(Mob grinder is just too much work lol)
Yes, it's a lot of work. It has two great advantages: More gunpowder than a (normal) person will ever use, and ZERO danger.
Actually, it's not that much work if it's built above ground; I build mine underground, since a big mob tower is kind of an eyesore. My last one was rather small, but it outputs around 1,450 items/hour. During the test, I got around 330 gunpowder in an hour... so, five stacks with no risk of getting blown up. Enough to make almost a full stack of TNT, and that's a SMALL grinder. I could build it above ground in less than an hour, and prolly make it much bigger to boot.

That is alot of Gunpowder and I have thought about using a grinder since a few of the people I play with have showed me theirs and have wanted to construct one for me on one of my maps and I do agree the danger is alot less like 0% but for me I love to kill creepers and yes it takes alot longer just to get 1 stack but I like doing it that way although for future maps I am considering going the mob grinder way to cut down on time but I won't do that til after 1.8 comes out because there will be so much amazing **** to see and do besides kill creepers to get gunpowder so until then I will stick to swords and arrows plus my diamond axe from time2time
Plus, you get tons of ready-made arrows, bones, and feathers. Mine is a "hybrid", with above ground troughs to send passive mobs into it from the top, so I also get leather, wool, porkchops (half of 'em pre-cooked by the lava blade!), and I have a secondary capture room for the passives that slip under the lava blade. Did you know chickens can lay eggs in water? On the one-hour test, I got 26 eggs.
The mob grinder worked for me. Just have to build it. It took awhile for me to get all that I needed, but I was finally able to level 3 mountains and make my town and rollercoaster
Build a mob farm, it's worth putting in the time because a working one will always give you something. I make sure to setup the drop zone so I can safely go afk and just stand there collecting stuff. One afternoon of chores in the real world while my character rides a minecart in a circle netted several hundred items, including more gunpowder than I really need. And it still drops items all the time without me having to do any work.
Above ground is easier and quicker to build but may look ugly, I prefer to "hide" my mob farms in hillsides as they activate when people run around on the surface. Underground builds take longer, and you usually have to go down to them before they start spawing stuff.
Heres my latest mob spawner build it may help I go afc and come back get loads of loot
Watched your video was interesting. My question is if they live with the water being put on why waste time on raising the sand. Doesn't water act as both? Cool vid

I just fight ghast because for some reason, ghasts are easier to kill than creepers.
OK so, the OP wants gunpowder.... A grinder is the most efficient way to get it legit but, Why does he need the powder???? TNT I assume.... My question is, What project are you working on that needs the TNT???? ALSO, not legit but, Duping is the best way IMO to get items needed quick, make 1 block and it's a possible Infinite source.... (Just a thought) I'm not endorsing just giving an option available!!!! Good Luck!!!!
I'm with Hiriam. currently digging from sea level to bedrock to build ethos's multi-story grinder from the video. After filling in the ocean, Ive started diggin and I'm around y40.
Whats all this talk of more gun powder then you will ever need? I tend to lay a full inventory before i set it off and usually do that about 20 times in a row. I have 4 double chest worth laid in my neather i cant blow up. It freezes every time i ignite it.
