First off, welcome to minecraft and welcome to the forums. I am glad you are enjoying the game, it is quite the amazing experience. Like said above, 1.8 will have many things that will change the game from how it is now. So don't get too comfortable. Stocking up on things like, food, arrows and good stuff like that will definably help you.

Haha i don't think you need to teach him the total basics of the game, he mentioned he's had it for over a week and i think he already know's these.
The basic "new user" tip I have is to go through the tutorial- twice. You'll miss a bunch the first time as you hasten through it. Also consider the Tutorial World as your "test world" were you can practice and test things out.
Welcome to the forums! Minecraft is all about building, so make something big like a village, a castle, or try pixel art! Just remember to have to fun.
I already started building a castle. I have a nice cave right below my castle bedroom, so that's where I go to get supplies like, Iron, Diamonds, Gold Ect...
I'm doing peaceful mode right now, because I'm not quite use to creepers yet.
Welcome! Minecraft is a great game where, if you don't pay attention, you will waste hours and hours without even knowing it! I'll give you some tips, since you're new to the game.
1. Do not straight up/down. Digging straight down can cause you to fall in lava, or just into a cave where you get mauled my mobs. Digging up is also dangerous, because you can have sand or gravel fall on you and suffocate you.
2. If you're wanting to make a simplistic house, just dig into a mountain. Dig out the insides to the size of the house you want. It sounds corny, but if done right, it can be very fancy. This will also help for when you get into redstone contraptions, and start to make hidden bases.
3. If you have siblings or other friends/family that you let play your Xbox, I recommend putting a password on your Xbox account, so you have to have to a password to play on your world. If they have access while you're not around to supervise them, they could mess up everything you've been working on.
4. If you want cool skins, but aren't willing to buy them with Microsoft points, just buy the preview of the skin packs. You'll get maybe 5-10 skins for free, and some of them are awesome.
5. Making a castle, eh? Beware of mobs!
Creepers are very harmful and will mess up your creations if you're not careful.
Spiders can climb walls and can climb up walls and jump into your castle if you don't have a roof.
Skeletons are a huge nuisance. There's a good chance that when you attack them, you'll get hit by an arrow from them, at least once. Don't attack them when very low on health.
Zombies aren't that hard to deal with. They're slow. Multiple zombies attacking you though, can be harmful though.
6. Overall, just have fun! Using duplication glitches to get more of something ruins the excitement and feeling of accomplishment (at least for me). If you have any questions or problems, feel free to post on the forums, or send me a message on here!

One thing. If I were you I would start learning the mechanics of the game and wait for your major creations until after the update which is in a month or so (give or take a couple months). Just saying. I started a huge map. Made it look awesome. Tons of Recources and a huge mine complete with a huge castle, village, and nice house. Now I will just want to start a new world when the update comes out.
Don't Dig Straight Down [lava will kill u sometimes]
Don't Dig Straight Up [lava and gravel lol]
Never hunt Mobs with out Food.
IF you hear a "tsss" run its a creeper
