Yes, you have to have the map in your quick access bar at the bottom
I believe. Then 2nd, I'm not sure. I don't think so, just don't explore anything
untill 1.8 comes out to find out.
Having your world mapped out on your map doesn't matter. It is just useful to know where you have generated chunks in your world. If you have explored your world and generated the whole land, then you will need to start a new world to get the terrain features from 1.8.2, and later updates. You can use all the new items though.
good i won't explore anymore also i have only explored a small part of the map anyways this is good the whole reason
i started my world is so i can play on 1.8.2.

There was a topic somewhere discussing this where they think there might be a problem with the old generated land coming into contact with the newly generated land in jagged unnatural ways. However, it was a problem in the pc version so maybe 4J knows and can fix it. Anyway, I would very much like to know how it works out...I might start a map just to see for myself.

It isn't going to be fixed. It results because of the change in the code for how terrain generates. There would be no way to "fix" it, unless they just didn't change the terrain generation.

What do you mean by jagged unnatural ways? Do weird formations appear because I see those all the time.

Check my thread above^. It has pictures that will explain what he's talking about. It's extremely noticeable and does not look natural at all.
Think of it this way. You're boating in some water that was made pre 1.8.2. You just got 1.8.2 and haven't been past that point yet. As you go to explore, suddenly, the new terrain is a giant cut in half desert or mountain that comes out of nowhere because the 1.8.2 terrain is different than the 1.7.3 terrain.
First off since when did 4J announce that they were gonna generate new terrain in unexplored parts of your current map. Sounds like you are discussing something that someone suggested rather than what 4J has announced as a feature.

Well, seeing as how when the Clay Generation fix came out, if you had unexplored areas of your world, clay would generate there. That means new terrain can generate in older worlds.
Also, it's Minecraft. 4J has yet to stray from the PC version so we can safely assume that worlds generate the same way. That means pre 1.8 worlds that aren't fully explored should have post 1.8 terrain after the update.

Given the fact that they have already implemented this feature, unless they change what they have already done, it is pretty safe to assume you will be able to get the new features, especially since you could with old worlds in the PC version.

Retired StaffYes and no, the formations I saw were paralell in relation to the biome borders. Looked mostly like elevation change issues.
