You could use different patterns for the floor such as:
-Glass and wood
-Glowstone and wood
-wood and cobble
-etc.
But usually in my houses I have wool and use as a
carpet sort of thing because of the texture.
About your roof however you could make a simple
triangle type of roof (forget what they are called) by
using wooden/cobblestone stairs along the sides.
Anything with Glowstone mixed in is really good for 2 story buildings. The Glowstone will provide light for the first floor as well as the second floor to keep monsters from spawning in your house while you're out.
Edit: Not sure if I was clear enough: by putting Glowstone in the ceiling of the first floor, you're also putting it in the floor of the second floor which lights them both up. The same could be done with the ceiling of the 3rd floor and the floor of the 4th floor... I feel like I just said "floor" a lot...

With roofs there are some many different designs and they all depend on the structure that you have built, roofs that go into a point (using stairs or half slabs), there are some materials you can use like cobble, wood, wooden planks and stair either cobble or wood. Some structures dont need a pointed roof they can just be flat.
With floors there is many materials to use from wool to cobble stone. Wool is a good material to use as flooring, with the different colours you can create different designs (personally I use white and black wool to make my floor look like a chess board) and you can use more than just two colours. With other materials like wood, wooden planks or cobble or even smooth stone, I normally use smooth stone under my doors to my houses as a door step. If you are using smooth stone as the flooring you can also use sandstone which looks nice and a bit like marble flooring.
Just a few things I use in my houses and building that I have in my world.
thank you, i appreciated ( one last thing, i got deja vu comment from made out of blocks, weird.)
If you make an open air roof top area where you can stand outside, be sure to put blocks that protrude from the walls outside, so spiders can't get up there.

A really fancy floor could have a checkered pattern, with one block being glass with glowstone underneath, and another block of your choice.
