Alright so here's my debate. Build a hostile mob system above ground or below ground? I'm really only leaning towards item drop rates at the moment. Currently, I have one below ground with water canals pushing them up high and dropped to a 1-punch kill. I feel like if I have one in the air, the mobs will die faster, thus producing more drops? The mobs swimming up the thing seems to take longer.
Above ground system vs underground? Any pros and cons I should know?
Although a giant floating room in the air does look a bit odd. I'd just want to prepare for ender pearls soon.
I saw a post about a really nice and effective above ground one that looked like it would yield a good amount of drops. Unfortunately I can't find the post or get a hit on it via google. It was based off the design of a well known MC-er so maybe someone here will know. It was a tall tower made of cobblestone where the monsters dropped on a single block. The tower was attractive (which is one of the first things I noticed about it.) and would make a good addition to anyone's world.

I have mine above ground and regret it...... not because it's not effective, but because I had not chosen a location for my house
and who would have thought......... I find a cool series of caves that I made my home and now I rarely spend time outside
thus not spawning stuff on my mob spawner.....
although when i am close to it it produces a ton, i had to torch a good amount of a perimeter around it and underground too
but it is worth it (it's based off of something etho built)

Could you post a photo of etho's build because it might be the one I was thinking of.

I disguised mine inside a large structure; you can hardly tell it's a spawner.
