I need suggestions for lighting a town that doesn't involve glowstone. My main map is glowstone poor so it's a resource that I use sparingly. Does anyone know a nice way of using torches or netherack for light poles and the like?

you could use lava covered over with glass it looks nice in hall ways or 9and i know you said you dot want to use it but on paths but glow stone on ither side put a half block on top of it ( smooth stone) looks best and then a half block on the floor next to the glow ston on the bit that you walk on
I didn't think about the possibility of lava. The concern would be how close it can safely be to wooden structures.

Is the town near the spawn point? If it is lava may be a problem.
Yes, the town is near the spawn point. The lava solution would work in the area around the Keep and in other parts but I worry over the possibility of catching nearby buildings on fire. Even if I were to dig down two blocks and fill just one with lava and cap it with glass. I've had lava behind glass catch nearby wooden objects on fire before.

But these are even rarer than glowstone, at least in all maps that i've been in
True, but pumpkins are in such limited supply, and in a later update they can be reproduced to an infinite amount. Under those circumstances, I believe it's completely forgivable to duplicate them.

If your going to use lava next to building make the building out of wood slabs, you can lay slabs right next to lava and they will not burn. Just stack the slabs and your good to go on lava. Here's a example from my world
Ive been messing with a few different lighting ways but so far lava and glowstone look the best. Not too overpowering and bright but they look great together.
I did a lava lighting pool in my roof, built up in a pyramid design and once I was close to the top I made a pool of glass inside the roof and just filled in with lava and covered up, makes a great skylight with no actual sky.

I think I'm going to try some lava in the walkways and see what happens or maybe try a chunk of netherack on a pole.

Full slab blocks burn as of like 1.2 I think. The half slabs like that don't though.(But who builds a house out of half slabs anyway? Btw, I like the way that looks. good lighting for non-OCD people.)

I usually use burning netherrack for my lighting. It has more light than torches, pretty easy to aquire, and it looks FREAKIN AWESOME!Whoops, accidently quoted twice.

This is the Xbox version so that item doesn't exist yet.
