So a few months ago, when I had first started playing MC, I had built my first Nether Portal pretty close too my house ok? so I go to the nether, get supplies( glow stone, netherack, ext.) and I go back through my Portal back to the real world and....walk straight off a steep mountain and die..I later find that the game added a Nether Portal to my world and placed it on a mountainside. is this supposed to happen?

in a sense, MC trolled me..
unless your portal was destroyed somehow while you were in the nether it would build another, and even then i thought it was supposed to place a platform if there were air blocks wiithin a certain distance.
Yes, that is possible, because the way the game calculates where you should go doesn't always work correctly in both directions. So the game could in odd cases create a portal in the nether where it thinks it should go, based on your main-world portal, but then get (as you said) confused on the return trip, and create yet another portal somewhere else.
See this thread to learn about building matching pairs of portals across worlds.

yeah but still in every instance I have seen of it, he shouldnt have been dumped off a mountain, its its been forced to build in/nxt to air the game has always generated a platform wheni have seen it.
The first time I created a portal, I walked into the nether . . . and plunged down into the lava sea. Yes, there were 2 blocks of walkway on that unfortunate side of it, and then the abyss. Needless to say, I created a wall at the edge after ragequitting and doing it again.
So I can easily see someone else being just as careless/naive, and falling off a cliff. It's a new experience, and you just don't know what to expect.
