You can put it around trap pressure plates so the monsters/ players slow down for the circuit to reach the trap...but that would make them stand out for players. Its not noticeable to monsters, though. As far as I know, its only good for slowing things down that walk over it. Im sure you'll find a situation where you want somebody/ something slowed down.Edit: I also find it a little spooky, especially for pillars or ceilings of scary-looking houses. Kind of reminds me of "Soul Reaver"
Soul Sand has the ability to slow down mobs. You can use this in mob farms and in areas where someone must look at something for a longer period of time.
Soul Sand only has 15/16 of the normal block height. This makes it possible to reach Slabs only by jumping. Good for making people pay attention to entrances of buildings.
Soul Sand can prevent certain hostile mobs from being burned in the sunlight when they cannot jump. This is good for allowing players to see mob movement in open-air locations.
I read where someone said it could be used for a boat dock, so that the boat does not take to much damage and break. Have not tried it myself though.
Be careful with this. I just recently replaced my soul sand dock. My friend and I both ran into a bug with it where when you ride a boat and run into the soul sand we just instantly died. It didn't happen every time but 3 times was enough.

Give a man fire and he's warm for a day, light a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
You can put it on suicide chambers just for aesthetics. It looks good on creepy buildings, and when sprinting comes out it will be good for parkour maps.
