Unlike the PC version, each world in the Xbox 360 Edition is currently limited to 862 by 862 blocks. This is approximately the size of an in-game map. It is expected, but unknown if the world size will be increased along with the updates that will bring the Xbox 360 Edition up to date with the PC version.
I too can confirm that the Xbox version has a finite boundary. . . I can also tell you from experience that if you manage to build a minecart rail all the way around the border of that boundary and then take a ride on it, you'll lag the game to high heaven! That's probably the main reason we don't have infinite terrain. If just loading the chunks along the rim of the world lag the 360 that bad, having much larger a map could possibly cause the system to crash! I know after only one lap on my world tour rail, mobs became stuck in place, the day/night cycle stopped, and weather froze until i quit the game and reloaded it. I'm afraid to find out what happens if i go for more than one lap, so that railway has fallen into disuse!
The actual buildable area is 860x860, there is a one-block border around the whole map where nothing can be placed. Also, nothing can be broken/mined if you are below see level, in the border area.
I don't completely understand why we can't have a huge world, like on the PC. MC clones on Xbox have pulled it off, like FortressCraft, which even has much higher resolution blocks. They even have a spiffy animation when you load new chunks, where the blocks fly up from the ground to create mountains, plateaus, and floating islands. If the 360 could handle that shouldn't it be able to handle Minecraft's nearly-infinite world? I think it could, and just has something to do with Microsoft preventing it due to gamesave file size.
I don't really want the huge worlds. With our small maps, chunks don't completely unload. Meaning, when the bugs are hopefully fixed, MCXBLA will make a way better playground for redstone than the PC version.

I don't usually agree w/what you say Nosejob but w/your post I do. i hope somewhere down the line 4J actually goes thru w/larger worlds for the benefit of xbox MC community

I'm guessing we've had a duping argument or something? Bigger worlds is great and all, but if it means completely unloading chunks at a certain distance, I'm against it. The map isn't as small as everyone makes it out to be anyway. Though, it would be a good idea to add adjustable dimensions for creative mode. That way, you could sacrifice some of the world height to have a larger surface area, or vice versa. This way, the volume would still be the same and players could have the size of map they want.

the xbox is just one map, when you get to the edge you can go no further, they even modified one of the achievements, on a rail, to fit in the xbox build.
i got the xbox version first, my wife and children love it... we saw videos on youtube, and the kids really wanted to watch them, so we did. we got introduced to all that we were missing, enchanting, animal farms, biomes, mobs, huge areas, and then come mods, skins and texture paks.... we were blown away... had to buy the pc version! and now i'm a big fan too!!! i'm an old school gamer, and when i saw that the computer build was a role-playing survival game, and had adventure maps, i was sold!!
4j said it'll never be infinite, but it will be larger soon. It won't be infinite because the Xbox can't handle it. Pshaw!
well they said they are looking at it, not that it would be, and of course it wont handle infinite, the PC doesnt either, just considerably massive it doesnt matter any more.
