I'm with you. I don't get it either. Never been there- have no reason to go. I know about it, seen several videos, but I'm not impressed with it enough to make the effort to go there.
As near as I can figure the Nether was added because a few fans here thought MC "needed" an alternative universe to go to because they were bored playing the normal MC.
Glowstone, for builds.
Golden rods, for brewing,
netherrack, for fireplaces,
nether fortresses, for blaze rods/ golden rods and/or bricks for building.
Glowstone is about the only useful thing there at the moment, unless you need Netherrack for fireplaces as mentioned above. The Nether will become more useful in the next update, but it's still nothing really huge.
Right now there isn't that much to it. Glowstone is nice though(and needed for redstone lamps later). When we get potions, we will need blaze rods and nether wart. Blaze can be a good source for XP when we get enchanting. It is also a good way to fast travel(though not really necessary in this version).

well I'm chilling in there now and it seems to be for four [OK] reasons:
Fast traveling; in Xbox edition, 3 overworld block equals 1 nether blocks.
Infinite fires; because netherrack burns forever, it's great for fireplaces.
Cool lighting; glowstone is a cool alternative to boring old torches
Mob traps; since soul sand slows you down, it's great for keeping mobs temporarily at bay while you kill them.
You can't yet. You can get them when blaze are added to the game.
Edit: Just looked at the wiki, and they were added in the 1.9 pre-release. So we might get them in the next update, but probably not.

Tell me about it. They're being weird with the updates. Pushing things forward, pulling things back, all that dumb stuff.
The PC version has Blazes and nether warts blaze rods ETC but that is not in xbox yet until the adventure update arrives. But what i guess what is good in the nether is 1:Glowstone is used for decorative or a slime spawner 2:Soul sand can be used for slowing down the mobs in the mob spawner or for a parkour course type of thing 3:Netherack burns forever it is good for a fireplace. and 4 it is almost an unlimited source for nether rack or soul sand.

how do you get blaze rods???
That's why I use the nether constantly. It's my transportation hub. I have a railway system looping by 5 portals in the nether, each of which has a matched twin in the normal world. I also have railways to 2 other portals, outside of the main loop. Altogether, they cover the world's expanse pretty well, and distances through the rails are only 1/3 of the corresponding travel in the normal world.
And then there's glowstone, gobs of lava and netherrack, of course.
here are a few that I don't think was mentioned...
-Netherrack is a great block for scaffolding. It breaks quickly and you can mark measurements on it with flint and steel.
-The virtually endless supply of lava at such a convenient location (in most cases) makes lava-related builds much easier to make, besides duping of course.
-Easier and more promising supply of both red and brown mushrooms. In a matter of 10 minutes, I already found multiple stacks of each mushroom

erm to best of my knowledge they havent pulled anything back. we get the updates with somethings moved forwards if they think they will work with the update and the time they have etc.
brewing and fortresses don't exist in the xbox edition last time I checked
*gasp* my twin! LOL but yeah that stuff isn't in yet, and it's hard to tell how long it won't be in. As far as pushing things back, they (4J) are debating whether or not the should push Enchanting or Breeding back to a different update.
I had this awesome fortress I was working on and then I had a spawn glitch and I had to delete the world D': Regardless, I want y'all to post pictures or descriptions of the cool stuff you've done in the Nether (like what Cobra954 did)
