I've checked the wiki and used the search on this site but can't find an answer.
When flowers grow in your world, after you've harvested them.... do they regrow in the same location? or do they just spawn randomly all the time?
I need a poop load of pink dye for something I'm working on, and am in the middle of roaming my map and collecting as many red roses as possible. A friend just suggested in chat that I might exhaust my supply if I pick them all.
Does anyone know how it works?
Thanks in advance..... I know it's a strange question
From what I've done I can't say they regenerate in the same location however you do get seeds which if you can plant (I'm pretty sure there are seeds) and use bone meal to make then grow instantly. Don know if they spawn more then one when you plant seeds though.

Flowers don't regenerate as far as I know. The 'seeds' you are talking about are for growing wheat.
There's a relatively easy way to get as many flowers as you want, but you'll need plenty of bonemeal so it can't be done on peaceful. Clear a 10x10 patch of grass (not dirt!) and apply the bonemeal to the centre. Grass and flowers will grow on random blocks in that 10x10 patch. Harvest - the easiest way is by pouring a bucket of water over a raised block in the middle of the area, immediately collect the water again - and repeat. Using water means you don't have to pick each individual flower, so it's a lot quicker.
Good to know, but it seems to be pretty hit and miss. I tried it and got several tall grass and only 1 dandelion. The grass produced only 2 seeds. I usually get an average of two seeds per wheat plant, so farming wheat is a far more productive way to get seeds. I think the OP is the only one in her world, so there should be lots of wild flowers out there. Wouldn't just running around collecting them be far quicker to ensure she gets roses (for pink wool). She's going to need an equal amount of bonemeal to make the roses into pink dye anyway. It just seems to me that it going to take a lot of skeletons to farm roses and make pink dye.
Is there any way to encourage the production of more flowers rather than grass.. and flowers of a particular color?
No. The flowers you get from using bonemeal on a grassblock is random. Although dandelions are more common to get than roses. About 3:1.
Going around your world and harvesting flowers will get you a good amount but flowers are only renewable with bonemeal. A good mob grinder will yield chests full of bonemeal making it super easy to get flowers that way.

If I understand you correctly then, the OP can still safely go out and collect them all without worrying about accidentally eliminating them from his world (exhausting the supply). That is, it's not like sugarcane; where if you use the last one up as paper, you're hooped. Even if you've picked the last rose and made it into dye, you can use bonemeal to generate them and the probability would stay the same... 3:1 for dandelions over roses and perhaps 1 flower per seeding of bonemeal?
I agree, the mob grinder is the best way to obtain bonemeal... but, it's still will probably take a lot of skeletons to generate specifically pink dye. i still think it would be nice if the flowers were treated like the other plants in the game and we were able to plant flower seeds and get them to grow or leave one or two behind and they spawn themselves under the right conditions (like mushrooms).
Thank you very much for the responses..... Answered my question and solved my dilemma.
Kushman.... That chaps design is awesome, cheers man.
UpUp..... Love it how you assumed i was a lady, i do have long hair down to my backside.... But my wife will assure you I'm male. Funniest thing is when guys hang outta their car and wolf whistle..... only to realise "crap.... It's a dude!". Thanks for posting bud, you helped and made me smile.
Really appreciate every bodies help
Janda. :)I've been doing the same wire...... I dont wanna scar my landscape, I'm going for something very specific in my world.
Sorry about the gender screw up. Old person (me) with possibly some old gender stereotypes still hidden in the crevasses of my head, I guess. I'll have to work on that.
Funny thing about not wanting to pick the last flower... I've been the same way since I started. Leaving one and just hoping they would somehow spawn themselves and even avoiding chopping tall grass so that the natural areas I'm leaving would still look natural. Even worse, 9 times out of 10, I take an extra second to replant a sapling everytime I cut down a tree; and now I'm being overrun by big oak trees!. I think it might be time to back off being quite so green. Knowing now that there is a way to return the grass to it's wild state and recoup a few flowers, I think I'm going to get my mower arm out and also thin down some of my wild trees.

No need to be sorry my friend.... I had a great giggle over it. I probably would've assumed the same ( I'm an older gamer too )
And.......I was asking about flowers for pink dye! Lol
When I was new to the game and I was gathering flowers for dyes, I'd always leave one rose behind in each patch, just in case there was a way for them to spread naturally. Just couldn't bring myself to destroy the ecosystem. I'd mine the *&^% out of the mountains, but I wouldn't let myself pick all the flowers. Daft.
Then I'm even more daft. I don't harvest any flowers at all unless I "made" them via bone meal, I immediately plant saplings when I cut down trees, I always leave at least one mushroom standing when I find some (not in the Nether, though), never harvest the bottom blocks of cacti and sugarcanes except for those I planted myself, I replace mined clay blocks with sand, and I only mine sand from ocean floors in order not to damage the beaches.

Just tried planting one....it won't let me bonemeal it to multiply though?
Worth a shot though.
Cheers for the reply mate.
Bummer..... Better stop picking them til I know for sure.
Appreciate the response.
