Hi!, I have been staying home recently due to the fact that I have a flu, So I was happily exploring a cave On the xbox when I found something that is strange.I'm not sure why, But I've found Diamonds at Coordinates Y:18.
I'm not sure if this is a bug, I wish I could post a screenshot but I have no clue How to post screenshots other than opening the menu and pressing Y. This world that I'm playing on is a bit old, I have been playing it since 1.6 I believe. And I guarantee you 0% troll here. None of this is fake However I'm just dumbfound That this is happening. I have had a ten minute look on the Minecraft Wiki and it even states that "Diamond only appears in the bottom 16 layers of the map."

I can't remember much seeing as i've already sealed off the cave and grabbed the diamonds, I mined all around the diamonds to make sure that there wasn't any lava and when I was standing on the block beneath the diamonds it came up with coords Y:17
I found diamonds at level 26 before and not just one diamond it was a cluster of 5. It was so random it kinda surprised me but I think it happens sometimes

Standing1 block below the diamonds puts your head 1 block above them, right? So, your map indicates what level your head is on, so it was your head on y17. That still puts the diamonds on level Y16 and the block beneath your feet on Y15..

I assume his head was at the same level or one below the diamonds. If he was checking for lava, why would he not check under the diamonds?
That's what I'm thinking, I've seen several generation bugs. Once, in a cave, I saw a patch of bare dirt with one block of tall grass...

Just going by what he said. So, question for the OP - were you looking at the diamonds straight on level with your head?
It is possible to find the odd diamond above Y16, but they are so very rare that it is not worth trying to go after them at those levels. If you're targeting diamonds, then best to look at Y16 and below. I wouldn't bother running a drift looking for diamonds at any level above Y16. However, if I ever did stumble onto one above Y16, then glitched or no, I'd certainly mine it anyway. ;D
i found some at 17 once, i didnt really think anything of it since it was only a block over 16. you seem like you've pretty much been blown away though lol
The highest I ever found diamonds was underfoot at Y:21 on the Quesadila seed. So either layer 20 or 19, depending on whether or not the y coordinate is 1 or 2 higher than the block you're standing on.

I have seen the exact same thing, at first I thought it was a dirt area with a dungeon, but then I found the tall grass after going through another cave to get there (there was a giant lava pit and lava falls)
I reckon the diamonds being above L16 is a generation bug, I'm sure I've heard of someone finding Gold on the surface before too.
There are people who also say that lava pools never spawn above L12 either, but I have a flow of lava in my world which is coming from at or just above sea level, entirely natural.
Did the developers state that diamond should never ever spawn above level 15 (that's what the Wiki says)? If not i wouldn't call everything you don't expect or don't find working like in the Wiki a bug so quick ... maybe that's well intended and just the Wiki is wrong ?
When the Wiki says that something is found between certain levels, I don't think they really mean that it will never, never be found anywhere else. It's just a really, really rare occurrence, so really not worth a player's time to concentrate of looking for those ores at those levels.
The world generation protocol seems far from perfect. I've walked quite a few new worlds lately and little oddities in world generation seem to occur all the time. I've seen single grass blocks underground, trees suspended in mid-air (right at the creation of new world, not because I cut the trunks out from under them), water suspended in mid-air overhanging a cliff, and most recently, even single blocks of water completely suspended in mid-air.
Everyone's perception of what a rare ore find means is different. If the Wiki description said rarely found above level 16 instead of never, then probably there would be a bunch of people who would go out specifically looking for diamonds on surface and then come back and rage on about not ever finding them. It's a no win situation really.

those people are wrong, its uncommon, but entirely possible for lava pools to spawn above 12. 12 and below is just where they're most common.
I havee had lava pools spawn at above sea level and have found diamon above y 10 i think gen is just a lil diff on mcx360 ill ppst screenies when i get home of some ridoculous things on my 1 seed

Lava pools and lava falls on the surface aren't really that rare. They're seen a lot on the PC version as well.

I do not think its a bug but it is probably extremely rare for them to spawn at that level and higher maybe.
