I am sure plenty of people on here know how to build a sand generator! And i am sure even more DONT know! But there is one thing i wanted to point out about them! Iwas trying to build one the other day and the video i watch the guy ran the redstone from the lever to the pistons so far that he needed a repeater! In the vid he said you will need it because of how long the line is. I ran my line shorter and therefore did not use a repeater! And it did not work!
As it turns out that .10 of a second delay is needed to get the speed and time correct for it to work! You have to have 1 repeater to your pistons! The video i saw was statics sand and gravel generator! Ssagg i think!
I just wanted to point that out! Just wanted to feel useful!
[edit]As Clock/Delay
By right-clicking on the repeater, you can set its delay from 0.1 to 0.4 seconds. Longer delays can be made with multiple repeaters; for example, a repeater set to '4' and another to '1' will give a half second delay (0.4s + 0.1s = 0.5s).
I made one on my world after seeing a tut and brought the redstone only far enough that I can stand at the end of the water flow and catch the sand while I'm working the lever. I don't have a repeater inline, I just have to modulate the speed of my right finger and it works flawlessly. I get about 5 stacks for about 90 seconds of trigger pumping.
I tried using an alternating current set up to make it work automatically, but that didn't work, probably because of what you are describing...
I made one on my world thats insanely efficient. Spits out about 40 sand per second and can fill your inventory in less than a minute lol Why almost all of my buildings are sandstone. Its a tunnel of 10 pistons on each side, so 20 total. Had to instal a second water channel to bring it all the way to me.
To make it run, you flip the top switch to push the block down and complete the redstone clock, then you flip the power switch on, then back off as quickly as possible once.
It will run flawlessly every time.
To turn it off, you just flip the top switch back off.
You don't need it specifically. You just need any solid block to carry the signal though the repeater loop (clock), and any solid blocks to put redstone on for the line up to the piston that will pull the sand. And of course you need a couple of solid blocks to put the switches on. All of the other blocks are just there to create a small tunnel, just so the sand doesn't fly all over the place. You can just stand in that tunnel and go AFK while the machine runs, and you will automatically pick all the newly generated sand up.
yo pax I made mine automatic now with a simple 4x1x2 circuit (its the smallest I could get it) design is different then my other one too, you'll have to come see it and that special project I've been working on (you know what)

And just google minecraft sand generator!
I thought this was fixed in 1.7.3, and only worked in 1.7.2???

A shot from the back:
While running:
To make it run, you flip the top switch to push the block down and complete the redstone clock, then you flip the power switch on, then back off as quickly as possible once.
It will run flawlessly every time.
To turn it off, you just flip the top switch back off.
Why not just duplicate it?
