As soon as minecraft for xbox 360 is updated to the same level they should make it so that xbox people start up the game then have the option added to the main screen to access server address like on PC minecraft. That should let people join PC servers.
If they did that I would buy PC version on minecraft just to host an XBOX only server. I wouldn't care that I had to buy it twice and minecraft would prob explode on xbox as well. I like the controller but enjoy the idea of playing on a server.
I made a server on xbox 360 that was flooded but the xbox overheated and then I didn't have creative mode. If they did that I would re-open my server 24/7 for everyone (unless there was a way to make it xbox only)
I would also like an option if that becomes a possibility that only certain people can edit and they need to request editing permission...if it doesn't already exist.
Just to help with the idea...make it so the xbox people need a PC log in to do it...then I wouldn't care but I would buy 2 coppies of the PC version. 1 to host a server and 1 to play it.
Please if anyone else agrees or has anything else to add speak up and if we are EXTREMLY lucky they will read this and do it.
Probably not. Pc uses Java , Xbox uses C++ . Two different languages all together .
If anything were to happen the pc players would be forced to play in smaller worlds with less players more than likely. Unless they add infinite terrain , still I think max players on Xbox would be 24 .
i like the idea! To get around the languages problem, 4j or mojang or whoever could release minecraft 360 edition for the pc. Then i guess everyone would need to get that c++ program to run it. With that program on the pc, it would be easier to mod wouldn't it? Microsoft doesn't want just anyone to have their coding language, so i guess that's not a very good solution is it?
I think halo was doing cross platform at one point, but durring the testing they found that pc players would dominate the console players nine times out of ten. This was an accuracy issusue between the mouse and joystick if i'm not mistaken. Accuracy isn't that huge of a deal in minecraft though, so i think they can and should(at some point) do it.
hasn't the pc updates slowed way down since release? They don't nessesarily need to be totaly the same, a dlc or mod could be releases for the pc version allowing it to be compatible with xbox, and if you bought the xbox version, you get that dlc for free or something. It has already been stated that the xbox will have exlucive content in the future, so they are never going to be quite the same beast. I think for the most part, people want dedicated servers that are open 24/7. 4j is discussing rental servers right now, so maybe we wont even need cross platform (but it would be nice)
Xbox 360 Edition - 8 Player Limit, much smaller sized worlds, different programming languages, etc, etc.
Thereare some pretty hefty problems in the way that will make this never happen. The Xbox 360 would not be able to handle playing on a PC server. Most maps on PC servers are at least 15,000x15,000 and have anywhere from 40 to 250 players at once. The Xbox would not be able to handle either of those.
However the effort (as we currently now have two very different minecraft versions) and further much more the restrictions that MS forces onto developers for their games will make that never ever happen .. technically possible if the resources for that were available, but MS would not allow that (or is there any other example game where such cross-platform thing happened? I don't know one..)
FFXI was cross-platform, PC and 360. I know there's a difference since FFXI was a non-PVP game. But, the point is it's very possible.

There could be servers with those restrictions. The only reason for the player limit though would be world size. If Xbox can handle thousands of players, even in a non-RAM-intensive world, I'm sure it can handle a couple hundred in a resource hogging one. Sure, no PC users would play on them, but then Xbox still gets servers at least. There would still be some PC users that would prefer an XBLA world. Redstone engineers, anyway.
My brother only seems to want to play minecraft on Xbox, just because it is on the Xbox and not on the computer. I thought of a Bridge type thing and went to the forum just to find there was already a topic on it. I hope this thread gets a response from the Mojang team, as it will boost buisness for both PC and XBOX versions of the game. As Geneo said, they CAN do this but it is up to Mojang TO do it. As for some hardware limitations on the XBOX, the only way as I see it is to wait for the new console to come out with better hardware. Until then I don't see any other way, as there is always a way to get around software, but the only way to get around the hardware is to update it.

Mojang doesn't visit the forums but 4J does occasionally. It's also not just up to Mojang. It's up to Microsoft, 4J, and Mojang. Microsoft does not usually allow any cross platform play. There are maybe a handful of games that have had it on the Xbox 360 out of the thousands of games there are.
I also don't really think that Minecraft needs any sort of business boost. The PC version just hit 7 million sales and the Xbox 360 Edition is probably nearing 4 million. Even separately, that's more than some huge big budget, AAA studio developed games sell in half the time or even their entire time on the shelves.
With a new console coming out in 2013-2014 I think we will have to wait until then because of sever restraints on the xbox. At the same time you gotta give a little to get a little. So if the cross platform servers meet the xbox limitations and 4J Mojang and Microsoft can work together on it then its possible for the 360
The different programming languages shouldn't affect it as much as the hardware-related restrictions. In fact, as far as I know the pocket edition has cross-platform between iOS and android, which both typically use Objective C and java, respectively.
However based on platform hardware, the xbox is at a significant downside and will be in the future unless they vamp up their future xbox release more than they initially advertised it to be,
Shadow run was a multiplayer pvp game for pc and xbox. It's not like it can't be done, everyone is so quick to point out obvious things that would just take time to work around. If you don't understand computer languages or have ever taken a class in c++ or java, I don't see how you can make judgements on what's possible.
You don’t need to have taken a class in then to know that yes it is hard to do. But also 4j will need to get this update out and at least get the two versions of the game on the same level and they keep pushing the update back. So it’s obvious there having a hard time with this as it is. So realistically speaking i don’t think they’ll start working on it for a year or more. After they come out with this update they will need to come out with fixes for the bugs. Then I’m not sure if they’re going to introduce servers in this update if they don’t than they will need to work on that as well. And even after they get all this done it will still need to be a priority on their list. They may not ever try to do it XBLA has their own agenda as far as what updates are coming out. So with all that being said i don’t think that it’s anywhere in the near future.
And even if they do it will not be likely that enough people will play after you add in the game restrictions between the two then creative mode goes out the window. Maybe not skyblock but that’s about it. So that cuts the population in half and then you have just pvp and depending upon how you set that up then it might be able to bring enough players to support the time spent on that update but the thing is…why would pc players want to play on the XBOX version. After all you can mod your own game for free on the pc infinite worlds as well as free texture packs and skins not to mention the performance boost you get from playing on a nice comp. and they would play on the Xbox version for…what reason.

that will never happen EVER dont even ask for it cause it wont happen not in a million years sorry if this isnt something that you want to hear but its just impossible

This, all the way. It is possible, even if 4j isn't willing/ doesn't see it as a neccessary goal. Following their feeds and updates, what I've come to understand is that the Xbox version is meant to be somewhat independent after it's brought up to the PC's level.
They've also indicated that later feature changes will allow for better management of "servers" (AKA: "online multiplayer"), such as griefer guarding (burn/ block protection) and of course, creative mode (coming to Xbox sometime between now and September). I think features such as these will be a more likely fix for your current server problems.
Either that, or you could just play the PC version with an Xbox controller.
(Go ahead, Google "Xbox Wireless computer dongle")
The impassable issue is that the Xbox 360 version will never be updated to the level of the PC version because of how far ahead the PC version already is and they are both being updated.

The gap won't close.
I see your reasoning and where it's coming from, but from what we've seen so far, I don't see that you're completely right.
Xbox has already gone from low Alpha stages (somewhat equivalent to 1.6, etc.) to including redstone and pistons. If you read 4J's feed, they've said that the "Adventure Update" (AKA: PC's 1.8.2) will be added, along with Creation Mode and more Multiplayer features within the next few months. This is significantly less time (from 1.6ish in Alpha to 1.8.2) than it took the PC. Because previous updates are already "previous," 4j can bundle many features into one update, thus, effectively "filling the gap."
I've also seen a drop in the update speed of the PC version, which might also be in allowance for more featues in a single update (Major "Adveture Update"-sized update in the works?).
(For some reason, the term "mind the gap" just came to mind...)
Here's something to boggle the mind:
The PC one may continue to evolve and get updated.
The xbox one? With a whole new system coming out with new capabilities, can you say "Minecraft II"?

Does any of that even make sense?

We can come up with lots of things we think they "should" do, but can or will they?
You already know the answer to that.
