Agreed, just a pointless mob added because some people thought there should be something swimming around in the ocean.

Apparently there are fish in the oceans, because one of the achievements is to catch a fish.

Squids are also good for making you think you have found a slime chunk when the roof of your cavern also happens to be the floor of the ocean. Apparently squids use almost exactly the same sound file as the slime spatter. My daughter and I hunted around for almost an hour trying to figure out where the slimes we were hearing were hiding. After giving up, I happened to look up at the ceiling and saw a set of squid tentacles glitching through the roof....
