Alright, I'm sick of running into lava. It's not that I die, it's just so annoying to get rid of. I don't want to make all that obsidian and spend years mining it. So tell me, what is the most effective way to get rid of lava?
i usually just dump a bucket of water on it, really. if i want to completely do away with it i'll bring some gravel with me, but the bucket of water is my go to solution. i don't ever mine it (other than enough for nether portal), i just turn it to obsidian so it's easier to get by.

The problem usually is that I'm trying to make a slime farm, and there's a huge pool of lava where I want it.
I had that problem with a slime chunk, a big nasty pool of freaking lava right in the heart of it. I found a combo approach to work well. I used gravel to help fill it in and water to mine some of the obsidian out. It was less time consuming than turning it all into obsidian. If it's a huge pool, you might consider just scratching it and going elsewhere.

I had the exact same issue last night! But im stubborn! So i grabbed 6 stacks of gravel and a diamond shovel!
Took hours to fill in as i got tired of running back for gravel so i started to dig up gravel and recycle! And i kept finding single blocks of lava as i started digging it out!
Mine went around one side of my slime chunk! From left side to back to right side and 5-6 blocks deep!
I think the easiest way to get rid of lava is if there's some water nearby, dig a passage for the water to go through leading into the lava.
Lol. Using up a measely 3 iron to make a bucket to collect water and then empty it on a block right next to the lava is much quicker than mining a path for water to flow to lava.
If I want obsidian for a portal or project, I sometimes will throw water on a lava lake. More often than not, I collect buckets of lava, build a trough 1 deep on surface, poor in the lava so there is no flow, poor water on a block that frames the trough beside the lava and turn that into obsidian instead. That way, I know there is no lava under the obsidian I'm mining.
If I don't want any obsidian, I just fill in the lake with sand or gravel, then mine it out to get a look at whatever ores have been hiding under the lava lake. I just have to be careful when mining out the outside ring of sand or gravel, since a source block can start to flow from the side. If that happens, then I quickly plug that hole before the lava really starts to flow. It usually works fine; and that way, I don't have to carry a diamond pickaxe all the time (in case I mess up and die in the process).

Instead of freakin out, I dug all around it, then one block down and glassed it in.
Makes a nice feature in an otherwise bland slime farm.
2 layers if you're paranoid.
If there is one misunderstood rule in Minecraft, it would be this: Don't mine cobblestone unless you know what you're doing.
Cobblestone can ONLY be placed by players, so understanding that, you should know it was placed there for a reason...
Self-made "rule" btw, not any sort of real rule.
Just something to keep in mind while you play.
