If you sign in a guest over and over, you'll notice that it'll spawn relatively close to the same area every time.
Each time you spawn, place a block down. After just a minute or two, you'll notice a square form. Keep in mind the spawn is 20 x 20, so if you see that you have 2 blocks that are 20 blocks apart, then you've found the length of the square.
Or spawn once so you know where the spawn is, then try placing lava around. There will be a 32x32 square where you cannot place lava.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
I already did what you're talking about. To check the spawn area, place lava on the ground and if it's on the spawn area, an error message will pop up, not allowing you to place the lava on the spawn location. Place blocks outside the area where you are allowed to place the lava, outlining the spawn area.
I'd like to make an obsidian box that players joining my game spawn inside. I'd make a piston operated door so I could let them out if I so choose.
Just think it would be kind of funny to do.

Retired StaffPlayers spawn on a 20x20 square in your map, no exceptions.
To prevent instant deaths, you cannot place lava within 6 blocks of the spawn. So the "no lava zone" would be a 32x32 area.
If you make a 20x20 square where you SHOULD, then yes, everyone will spawn on it.
