Well, before 1.8.2 rolls in with all the swiss cheese caves, abandoned mineshafts, ravines and strongholds, it would be easier to dig down without falling into the depths of a cave so digging down isn't really a danger to me.
I always dig down(for fun) and it always gives me more good than bad. For example, I find underground lakes, caves(beside them, not falling into them), caverns, mob spawners, and ores. I've dug down since the first day MCXBLA came out and only one bad thing happened to me, I fell in a lava lake.
But I kept digging down(slow lava can't kill me!) and I found an underground lake
I know something bad will happen one day but meh, it doesn't bother me much.
So, question is in the title, you know what to do.
Digging down isn't a good idea... I dug down once and lost a full set of diamond tools (excluding the hoe of course), then I went to the same spot with a new diamond pickaxe thinking "I got this." and did almost the same thing, this time I dug down 2 blocks wide stepping on one then digging out the other one and vise versa, but I still fell into the same lava. My friend died laughing.
Kids, stay in school, don't do drugs, and never dig down.
Whenever I did straight down I take ladders with me since crouching on a ladder prevents you from going down it. Dig down three blocks from the ladder, if it's safe, I drop down and place more ladder. Takes a bit longer to dig, but it's safe, and gives you the advantage of already having a easy route back up.
Im with OP! I have always dug down, saved it before doing it and turning off autosave until i was happy! Never hit lava! YET!
Pretty much any damage in this game is can be undone with timely manual saves and then a timely exit without saving if something disastrous happens. I use this technique sometimes and sometimes its more fun to just suffer the damages and go on. It's really sort of a cheat afterall. ;D
Anyway, I have dug straight down and, more frequently than not, fallen into a lava lake as a result. I don't know what the odds actually are, but I figure my luck must be pretty bad and maybe someday soon I will have found every lava lake in my world that way. I don't see how it really reveals very many ores since it only shows up 5 blocks in each layer. I seem to have pretty good luck sinking either 3 x 3 circular stair shafts or the 1 x 3 downward stairs and then cutting drifts on key layers away from that point. Caving does garner a lot of some ores, but I find it more time consuming than the drift method.
I like the ladder idea and will have to give it a try.

I usually just save the game and do whatever I want to my world. Grief my house, dig down, make TNT, anything. But when I'm serious, I have an iron pick(if I have lots of iron already) and I put all my valuables in my chest. Anything useless that I have on me can "die" with me if something bad happens.
I never dig down, and have to agree with UpUp. It's sorta like cheating on the rules. Have you ever noticed that some worlds don't seem to have lava pits? My first xbox world i went to bedrock and dig a room...it took about 30 seconds to walk the length of it, no lava, ever. I deleted it.

You deleted your world because you have didn't find lava?
That's sorta weird.
