A friend of mine and I wanted to do something similar to this. We wanted to leave the top as a shell, though. Not touching anything on the surface, but have everything underneath dug out down to bedrock. So, you could be on the surface fine, but you dig the top dirt block, and watch that step! lol
I'm gonna mine the whole map. Or at least give it a darn good try. I have never seen something like this done before, either on X360 or PC, and given that X360 has a 1024x1024 map limitation, I'm going to mine the whole thing down to y: 12. Yeah, I know, it's crazy, and yes, I've done the math. I'm going to literally be mining millions of blocks in order to get this done. Thought I might share my insanity with you guys.
A little background on why exactly I'm doing this: The main reason is, I'm bored and I want to see just how bored I am. I am currently smack dab in the middle of high school, and with the break I'm on right now, I've been playing Minecraft as a good stress reliever. Things sorta snowballed, and right now I have on my hands what I personally think to be my biggest and most daring project in the game yet. I've already powered through close to five diamond and eighty stone shovels, and I intend to keep on going till I'm finished.
If this crazy, lunatic project gets much interest, I'll post some screenshots of what I've got. Thoughts, ideas? Because after I finish, assuming the heat death of the universe has not occurred, I'm going to have a load of blocks to play with.
Numbers:
As of August 19, 2012:
13,824 blocks of cobblestone have been collected.
Around 3,456 blocks of sand.
300 blocks of dirt. (I'm in a desert biome right now)
Photos!
View from the bottom up. Been playing on and off today, got quite a bit done.
View from the surface looking down. I fell down once while taking this picture.
self explanatory
Better put your chests at level 12 then. LolI did that at least at level 11. That's how I do my mines now.
I just build a house.. have a stareway that leads down to level 10-12 then mine literally at that level the entire world.
Best way to find Diamond I've found. Do that along with mining diamond with only a Fortune III Pickaxe, I've managed to fill an entire chest full of diamond before. Not diamond blocks mind you, but I have managed to find enough to fill an entire chest full of diamond that way.
I tried doing this on Minecraft Classic once. It worked fine, having a small map, after flattening the mountains, though, I didn't reach past sea level minus 2 blocks.. Classic couldn't read it's own save format anymore, the game was too old.

Your next project I estimate will be in mid 2016...
Build a perimeter wall all around the map to the highest point then roof the map in
We once tried doing that, but ended up only making a mud building about a quarter the size of the map, and I think it was about 50 blocks high with a roof and then built a town inside it. It took four of us ages to do (pre-creative mode). Even at that size it's kinda pointless because the draw distance doesn't give you the full effect, but we had fun doing it.

I'm doing something like that, Since I still have my first MC world for the 360. I said that I am going to make it flat like a superflat world. I'm close to being done. If you wanna check it out then my GT is: The 1st Fuzzy
You aren't the first one to try an insane project like this. Strip mining is tedious, boring work... full of surprises.
The Bad News is this took me many weeks.
The Good News is you do end up with lots of blocks, lots of ores, and you find all the intersecting (hidden) caves.
EDIT: No, I didn't use any TNT. Every block was pickaxed, and I did it all by myself.
BTW, to mine the whole xbox map down to bedrock is over 47.7 million blocks. At one a second, working 24/7 (no fair sleeping, potty breaks, or eating!), it would still take you 553 days. Just a fun factoid...
Holy crap, this thread is still going? Seriously, I kinda forgot about this, and I lost the map. If people really want me to, though, I'll get in there and restart it.

I created this account just to reply to your thread. =P
It's sad to know that you lost your world, but I want to tell you to not give up!
We are still working on the world little by little. I just don't have as much time as I used to when I first started out the series.
I'd love to see someone complete the challenge without the use of Creative Mode or Duplication.
Good luck to all who want to do this!
