id reccomend a TNT drill.. actually many of them, but you will need at least 3 huge mob spawners to get all the gunpowder you will need, or you can just dupe the TNT.
Or wait for creative... But I'm imagining a hole straight to bedrock filled up with TNT, and take thousands of those and line them up in a grid all the way down the map and hook them all up to one button in an obsidian bunker.
Wow guys. Did not expect this thread to blow up so quickly.
Anyways, to answer some questions: I don't plan to use TNT, as I'm like some of you and I really want to know how much sand, dirt, and cobblestone you get from something like this. While I do plan to hire some help soon, maybe about 70% of this project is going to be me alone.
As a final thought-remember, I'm taking the whole map down to level 12, not bedrock. So there's still going to be about seven levels of stone left when I'm done, and maybe even then I'll mine that. And yes, I will be working on a timelapse.
This makes me want to start a server (PC) and see how fast I can get oh IDK 30 people sized server to do this area with only vanilla diamond tools. Yes that means no red power quarries :P. Maybe we could do a fundraiser, "Mine till you drop" I like that
I'm gonna mine the whole map. Or at least give it a darn good try. I have never seen something like this done before, either on X360 or PC, and given that X360 has a 1024x1024 map limitation, I'm going to mine the whole thing down to y: 12. Yeah, I know, it's crazy, and yes, I've done the math. I'm going to literally be mining millions of blocks in order to get this done. Thought I might share my insanity with you guys.
A little background on why exactly I'm doing this: The main reason is, I'm bored and I want to see just how bored I am. I am currently smack dab in the middle of high school, and with the break I'm on right now, I've been playing Minecraft as a good stress reliever. Things sorta snowballed, and right now I have on my hands what I personally think to be my biggest and most daring project in the game yet. I've already powered through close to five diamond and eighty stone shovels, and I intend to keep on going till I'm finished.
If this crazy, lunatic project gets much interest, I'll post some screenshots of what I've got. Thoughts, ideas? Because after I finish, assuming the heat death of the universe has not occurred, I'm going to have a load of blocks to play with.
Photos!
Area where I've started. Note the blocky shape of the hills, been mining those too. Seems small, but it was a LOT taller a couple hours ago.
Looking into the chasm, about 50 blocks up from level 12. Made a pool to jump in to get down quickly.
The same view, only from the bottom of the chasm.
im doing something sorta kinda similar but instead of mining the entire map down to bedrock im making a huge cave at bedrock across the entire map
I see a lot of people chiming in "I wanna help! I wanna help!" Once I get some work done, and organize the materials I have, I can definitely keep my console on and let you guys join. Maybe tomorrow, at best.
Also, the thought just popped in my head that I should totally do a Child's Play or something like that for this map. Maybe raise some cash for charity.

Minecraft for charity is an awesome idea, I would mindlessly dig on your world if a really good charity was going to get a big chunk of cash for it. You my friend are one of the good ones.
I have to say that the one photo that truly confused me, is the one that has 'self explanitory' under it.

View from the bottom up. Been playing on and off today, got quite a bit done.
View from the surface looking down. I fell down once while taking this picture.

Thanks for the support, guys!
Anyway, good luck.
Nope.
