I'm gonna mine the whole map. Or at least give it a darn good try. I have never seen something like this done before, either on X360 or PC, and given that X360 has a 1024x1024 map limitation, I'm going to mine the whole thing down to y: 12. Yeah, I know, it's crazy, and yes, I've done the math. I'm going to literally be mining millions of blocks in order to get this done. Thought I might share my insanity with you guys.
A little background on why exactly I'm doing this: The main reason is, I'm bored and I want to see just how bored I am. I am currently smack dab in the middle of high school, and with the break I'm on right now, I've been playing Minecraft as a good stress reliever. Things sorta snowballed, and right now I have on my hands what I personally think to be my biggest and most daring project in the game yet. I've already powered through close to five diamond and eighty stone shovels, and I intend to keep on going till I'm finished.
If this crazy, lunatic project gets much interest, I'll post some screenshots of what I've got. Thoughts, ideas? Because after I finish, assuming the heat death of the universe has not occurred, I'm going to have a load of blocks to play with.
Numbers:
As of August 19, 2012:
13,824 blocks of cobblestone have been collected.
Around 3,456 blocks of sand.
300 blocks of dirt. (I'm in a desert biome right now)
Photos!
View from the bottom up. Been playing on and off today, got quite a bit done.
View from the surface looking down. I fell down once while taking this picture.
the water would get in the way so that needs to be filled then taken back up.... then the map of minecraft is 1024x1024 the actual buildable area or destroyable area is 864x864

Thanks for the tip. With all the sand I have, I plan to fill up the lakes then mine them.
k i was off by two blocks lol but i wanted to post official link to Mojang supported wiki.... it is accurate
Unlike the PC version, each world in the Xbox 360 Edition is currently limited to 862 by 862 blocks. This is approximately the size of an in-game map. It is expected, but unknown if the world size will be increased along with the updates that will bring the Xbox 360 Edition up to date with the PC version.
You aren't the first one to try an insane project like this. Strip mining is tedious, boring work... full of surprises.
The Bad News is this took me many weeks.
The Good News is you do end up with lots of blocks, lots of ores, and you find all the intersecting (hidden) caves.
EDIT: No, I didn't use any TNT. Every block was pickaxed, and I did it all by myself.
BTW, to mine the whole xbox map down to bedrock is over 47.7 million blocks. At one a second, working 24/7 (no fair sleeping, potty breaks, or eating!), it would still take you 553 days. Just a fun factoid...

I'm terrible at math but assuming there are 2 million blocks in the game (I could be wrong, and probably am) and that one has infinite diamond pickaxes, I came up with an answer that it would take 7.7 days of constant mining, so in other words, 8 days straight.
In reality that'll probably turn into a month or so's dedicated work when you factor in sleep, breaks, boredom, filling stuff in, finding more diamond... and I am probably way out with my 2 million blocks figure anyway.
The world size is 864x864 (Some say 862x862). That would give you a 746496 area. The height is 128 so the volume of the map is 95551488. This is counting air blocks.
Keep in mind that the exact number of blocks can only be estimated unless you count them all manually.
Since about half the volume is air IMO, I would say that there are 47775744 blocks (not counting caves, lava , or water). Given thatmost of the underground layers are filled with caves (and thus air), the block amount is about 2/3, or 31850496.
Lava is 8% of layers 1-10 according to the wiki. That is597196.8, so the amount of blocks left are about 31253299.
The amount of water in a world depends on the seed. IMO 4976640 is the amount of water in the ocean. This is from sea level (62 usualy according to the wiki) and the max amount of depth in the ocean is between 1-20 layers. The area of a layer times 20 divided by 3 gave me the number above. From what I have seen, 1/3 of a world is water on the surface.
When you factor in all of this, the total block count is 26276659. REMBER THAT THIS IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE!!! I may be off, but it should be at least closer to the amount of blocks you will have to mine.
I hope this helps you a lot. This required research on the blocks and their layers (so about 45 min of my time)
How do you plan on removing all the water? lol it's no possible and also is a waste of time since creative mode is going to be released in the next update.

Retired StaffAlready hard to find maps with snow/redwood and Cactus.
I'm watching you... do not talk about me.... you will get in trouble

All the sand and gravel can remove the water.
wow you must like math
I am told that I am very talented at it. That is just my estimate based upon the info (from the wiki) and dimesions that are in the game.
