I wondered this myself. I havn't tried it yet, but I was going to build basically a regular gravity mob grinder but with only 1 air block above the spawning pads. I don't know what the spawning requirements for spiders are so I don't know if this will work. Also, spiders sometimes survive the fall out of my other grinders so I kind of abandoned the project. I get a decent amount of wool from my passive grinder but I still think the string/wool factory would be a good idea.

Spiders may cling to the walls on the way down. I don't think that spiders can climb blocks that have signs though.
i've built mine but i'm not getting any to spawn. it's basically two tiers, each one has one block of vertical space. the surrounding area is definitely lit up well enough.
why do you want so much string ??
good for bows, fishing rods and wool, wool is easier to get from sheep..bows dont degrade and fishing rods......well lol
Wool might be easier to gather from sheep, but you wont get nearly as much as you would from a spider grinder. For sheep wool, you have to run around chasing sheep, and hoping that pigs, cows, and chickens don't spawn instead. Spider grinder all you need to do is stand there and collect the string. A good grinder will get you stacks of string in just a couple minutes. There's no way you can find that many sheep in that amount of time.
Here's what the wiki says for spiders to spawn... Maybe someone else can help clarify but sounds like the pad would need 1 block of open vertical space (like you already have) with glass or another transparent block on top to make the 2 vertical required.
Light level of 7 or less, 2x2x2 space on solid blocks. Top half of space may be occupied by transparent blocks (glass, etc.)
4 string to 1 wool, up to 4 wool from 1 sheep, 4 sheep in a herd, 1 herd = 1 stack of string (if your extremely lucky)
i wouldnt want to put money on it but im saying chasing sheep is more fun and more rewarding than sitting there killing spiders lol
If each herd has 4 sheep, and each sheep dropped 4 wool, that's only 16 pieces of wool. You would need to find 4 full herds, and each sheep would have to drop 4 blocks. Not saying that's impossible, but it's highly unlikely. String will take some time too as you will need 4 stacks of string for each stack of wool, but it would still be quicker. (if your grinder is efficient)
To each their own though, if you have more fun chasing sheep, do it up.
I will say one thing about sheep, they're definitely the way to go if you're trying to get colored wool, not just white.

Thanks for the info, that is exactly what I wanted to know. I guess I should have checked the wiki first, good to know for future questions.
I have built a pretty badass spider drowner... it only works w/ spiders if you're interested in me showing you how to build one I can shoot over and build one in about an hour... Hit me up if your interested.

i'm thinking about putting one up since it's a good way to make wool until breeding shows up in 360.
