There are any number of reasons for FPS drops, without you giving us some more details, it would eb really hard to list all of them.
That being said, here is a short list of things to consider:
Are you using lots of pistons and/or complex redstone circuits?
Do you have lots of flowing water that might be causing lots of block updates?
How many are playing with you?
Are you playing on your own world or as a friend in another player's world?
How complex is the terrain when the lag starts (i.e. is it related to complex lighting solutions)?
Are you doing something crazy like blowing up tons of TNT?
I was wondering if anyone knows what causes this FPS lag. I want to fix it because it's really annoying.
