I've seen this bug numerous times, and it's one of the worst ones out there. I can ruin a multiplayer world for good. The bad news is that as far as I know, 4J haven't identified precisely what causes it, so they can't replicate it themselves and thus haven't started to fix it. There's a hypothesis that it's caused by the save file reaching a certain size, but I couldn't say if it's been tested or not. You've got my sympathies.

I always assumed this issue had something to do with too many items in the save's inventory spots. Maybe even too many inventories period, regardless of the amount of items contained. The max size of a gamesave is definitely not 10 MB. My old world was 17, and my current one is 12, maybe 13 by now. And one of my friends has a world well over 20 MB. Neither me or my friend have been struck by this glitch, so I doubt the size of the binary file is the case.
