What are the best items to use as a currency? I was thinking gold ingots or lapis lazuli (or possibly a combination of both) would make a good currency because they are pretty rare, they have few uses, and they cannot be grown like wood and paper.
What does everyone else think? Are these items good for acting as a currency? What are some other preferences?
I'll trade you some redstone for a piece of diamond
Simple enough really. It just requires everyone have their own stuff and they each individually determine the personal value of each item to themselves and how much they're wiling to give for that item.
As long as there is a dupe glitch no item will work as currency. I would suggest instead a credit system based in a bank type system where 1 or 2 bankers handle tracking of transactions via messages etc. And a secondary system of player bartering item for item trades. It can be a little work but is the only way to keep everyone honest.

All contributions are appreciated! Thanks!

It's the best option, IMO
